The Tunga Stava is a set of eight verses praising the river Tunga that flows at Sringeri. It addresses the river as a mother and speaks of the glory of her water. It also praises the good fortune of those who bathe there.

In the last verse the praise turns playful. Because the water of Tunga is like nectar, the poet says, water is called nectar, while the water of other rivers is like poison.

O goddess, O mother, how shall I describe your greatness? Even Ganga, whose glory the Vedas sing, comes to join you at Kataka and stays with you here for a month, O Tunga.
O Tunga, remover of impurity, how shall I tell the good fortune of the man who bathes in your water? Vishnu and Ishvara declare, “May this man attain my form.” One sense of the last phrase is that this declaration never fails.
Let there be gods in plenty who give happiness mixed with sorrow. I bow to Tungabhadra, who gives happiness unmixed with sorrow.
This stream of compassion flowing out to devotees shines as Tunga. Taking the form of a current, it removes all the sins of those who bathe.
The gist is this: O Tungabhadra, moist with compassion, you bear the name Bhadra, “auspicious”, to signify that you always do good to those who bathe in your water.
O Tunga of auspicious waves, whose mount is the makara, whose eyes outdo the deer, whose tresses shake off the bees, you who dwell on the stage of the town of Sringeri, delight also on the stage of my heart.
Shame on the eyes that have not seen the supremely beautiful Tungabhadra. Shame also on the tongue that does not taste this water, born of the boar. Shame on the birth of the man who does not bathe here.
O Tunga, your water, rich in sweetness, is like nectar, and so water as a kind is spoken of by the word “nectar”. The water of the other well-known rivers is like poison, and so water is also spoken of by the word “visha”. In Sanskrit that word means water as well as poison.

About this hymn

According to the heading on the website of the Sringeri Sri Sharada Peetham, this hymn was composed by Sri Chandrashekhara Bharati Mahaswami, Jagadguru of Sringeri. We give no date.

The setting is Sringeri, where devotees bathe on the bank of the Tunga. The boar in verse 7 is the boar form of Vishnu, and tradition says that Tunga and Bhadra were born from its tusks.

Verses 3 and 5 play on the name Tungabhadra. Verse 6 describes the river as a beautiful woman.

Some words in verses 2 and 5 are not clear. We keep the words adivinashashunyam in verse 2 and madjale in verse 5 as the text has them, and give only their gist in the meaning. The wit of verse 8 rests on the two senses of the word visha.

For life today

Think of coming home tired on a hot afternoon and drinking a glass of cool, clean water. How sweet it seems then.

The poet praises such water as nectar. The hymn reminds us how great a gift the commonest things of our day are, such as water, rivers and the streams of our own town.
