When the earth had sunk in the waters of dissolution, Vishnu took the form of a boar and lifted her on his tusk. These twelve verses are the praise offered to him then by Brahma and the sages.

Each limb of the boar is named as an implement of the sacrifice, so the hymn declares him to be sacrifice itself. In the closing verses the earth is honoured as mother of the worlds, and welfare is asked for all beings.

Victory, victory to you, O unconquered one, embodiment of sacrifice. Salutation to you as you shake your body, which is made of the Vedas. Salutation to that boar, the cause of creation, in whose hair-pores all the sacrifices lay hidden.
O Lord, sinners cannot see this sacrificial form of yours. The Vedic metres are your skin, the darbha grass your hair, clarified butter your eyes, and the rite of the four priests your feet.
O Lord, the sruk ladle was your snout, the sruva your nostrils, the ida vessel your belly, the chamasa cups your ear-holes, the prashitra your mouth and the soma cups your throat. Your chewing is the agnihotra.
The initiation rite is your new birth and the upasad rites your neck. The opening and closing rites are your tusks, the pravargya your tongue, the sabhya and avasathya fires your head, and the altar layers your life-breaths.
Soma is your seed, the soma pressings your standing form, and the kinds of sacrificial order your bodily elements. All the long sacrificial sessions are the joints of your body. You are every yajna, kratu and ishti, and the bond that holds them together.
Salutation to you, who are all mantras, deities and offerings, who are every sacrifice and action itself. Again and again salutation to you, teacher of knowledge, whose wisdom is realised through dispassion, devotion and mastery of the mind.
O Lord, the earth with her mountains shines on the tip of your tusk, like a lotus plant with its leaves carried on the tusk of a king of elephants coming out of the forest.
O Lord, this boar form of yours, made of the Vedas, shines with the orb of the earth held on the tusk. It looks like the beauty of a great mountain with clouds resting on its peaks.
Set firmly in her place this earth, mother of all that moves and stands, for the good of the world. You are the father and she is your consort, in whom you placed your own radiance as fire is placed in the fire-sticks. Together with you we bow to her.
O Lord, who else could believe in your lifting of the earth that had gone down to Rasatala? Yet it is no wonder in you, the wonder of the universe, who by your maya created this marvellous world itself.
As you shook your body, made of the Vedas, auspicious drops of water flew from the tips of your mane. Falling on us, who dwell in the worlds of Jana, Tapas and Satya, they washed us and made us greatly pure.
Surely deluded is the mind of one who sets out to find the end of the works of you, whose actions are boundless. The whole universe is bewildered by its link with the qualities of your yoga-maya. O Lord, bestow welfare upon it.

About this hymn

According to our source this passage belongs to the Shrimad Bhagavata, canto 3, chapter 13, where the boar who lifted the earth from the waters is praised. We give no date.

In verses 2 to 5 the names of sacrificial vessels and rites are matched to the limbs of the boar. These are technical terms of the ritual texts, and in the meanings we give their plain gist.

We print the text as the source gives it. In verse 3 we take graha as the soma cups, and in verse 4 we take a few terms as the named ishti rites.

Verse 12 recalls the limit of knowing. It says the end of the Lord’s works cannot be found, and the hymn closes with a prayer for the welfare of the world.

For life today

Look at a kitchen on a festival day. The ladle, the pots, the small vessels and the plates each have their task and their place, and together they make one festive meal.

In this hymn every implement of the sacrifice appears as a limb of one Lord. If we remember that even our small daily tasks are parts of one larger work, they may feel lighter.
