This is a salutation to Shankara Bhagavatpada in twelve verses. Most of them close with the line namah Shankaraya. The Guru is seen here as an ocean of compassion and as one who shines like both moon and sun.
The hymn was composed at Kalati, where Shankara was born. In the last verse the singer says that, knowing this Guru’s fame, he sleeps in comfort without fear.

Salutation to Shankara, ocean of compassion, giver of swift poetry, granter of every wish to those who bow, whose lotus feet are worshipped by the foremost ascetics, and who gives knowledge.
Salutation to you whose form is the bliss of consciousness, whose raised hand shows the sign of knowledge, whose form is a match for Ishvara, whom the summits of the Veda sing with joy, and who gives bliss to those who take refuge.
O Guru, the heavenly Ganga that was once amid the matted locks of Shambhu seems now to shine at your neck in the guise of a garland of jasmine. So I imagine. Is it so?
To him whose nails shine like moons and drive off the mass of darkness in the hearts of those who bow, whose gentle smile is like a lotus, who is the submarine fire to the ocean of great delusion, and who is serene, to that Shankara we bow.
To him who gives knowledge to the lotus of the inmost heart of those who bow, whose rays are unobstructed day and night, and who is a wondrous moon free of both spot and waning, to that Shankara we bow.
To him who gives joy to the lotus faces of those who bow, who always destroys the heap of darkness within, who shines brightly even by night, the unique sun, to that Shankara we bow.
You quickly open the heart lotuses of those who bow, by granting yoga. And is it for the same awakening that you hold fully opened lotuses in your hands? Tell me, O Guru.
To him whose radiance outshines ten thousand moons, who quickly grants every wish to the crowd of those who bow, and who is the foe of their long line of sorrow and sin, may there be joyful salutation always: namah Shankaraya.
O Guru, by teaching the truth you drive the dust of rajas from the minds of those who bow. That dust, having no other refuge, has come to your lotus feet, and you wear it under the pretext of the ochre robe. The wording of this verse is tight, so we give its gist.
To him who leads the minds of those who bow to the path of Vedanta with glances moist with compassion, who quickly destroys the multitude of sins, and whose face is smiling, to that Shankara we bow.
To him who in the past swiftly gave all knowledge to Totaka, who had not even a trace of the fragrance of Sanskrit speech, and who removed the pride of Pravaliya, with the gentleness of his lotus feet, to that Shankara we bow.
Knowing that you wish to lift swiftly those who sink in the ocean of worldly life and suffer, and knowing such fame of yours, O Lord, I lay down my effort and sleep happily, without fear.
About this hymn
The website of the Sringeri Sri Sharada Peetham says that Sri Sachchidananda Shivabhinava Nrisimha Bharati Mahaswami, Jagadguru of Sringeri, composed this hymn at Kalati, the birthplace of Shankara. The source gives no date, so we give none.
The metre is bhujangaprayata, four lines to a verse. Most verses end with namah Shankaraya. Verses 7, 9 and 12 end differently: they are words spoken straight to the Guru.
A few words in our Kannada text look doubtful. In verse 3 the sense of karmandi is unclear, so we give the gist without it. In verse 7, karomi may be karoshi, and we read it as you make. In verse 11 we keep the word Pravaliya as a name. These readings may be open to some doubt. The text was converted from Devanagari.
The hymn uses both moon and sun as images. Verse 5 has a moon that shines day and night, and verse 6 a unique sun that shines even by night. Verse 11 points to the occasion when Shankara’s disciple Totaka received knowledge.
· Source: the stotra section of the Sringeri Sri Sharada Peetham website (sringeri.net). Where readings differ, the difference is noted here.
For life today
When we draw back the window curtain in the morning, the darkness of the room leaves without any quarrel. We need not push the darkness out. It is enough to make way for the light.
Verse 4 holds the thought that the Guru’s light drives out the darkness of the heart. The last verse takes the next step: once the light has come, we put down the effort of worry and rest in peace.
