ಹಳ್ಳಿಯ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ರಾತ್ರಿ ಹಾವು ಕಂಡರೆ ಮೊದಲು ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಬಡಿಗೆ ಹುಡುಕುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹಾವು ಕಚ್ಚಿದವನೇ ಸಾಯುತ್ತಾನೆ ಎಂಬುದು ನಮ್ಮ ಎಲ್ಲರ ಅನುಭವ.
ಆದರೆ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಹಾವಿನ ರೀತಿಯೇ ಬೇರೆ. ಅನುಷ್ಟುಪ್ ಛಂದಸ್ಸಿನ ಎರಡು ಸಾಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕವಿ ಆ ಉಲ್ಟಾ ರೀತಿಯನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ.
ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಅಹೋ ಖಲಭುಜಂಗಸ್ಯ ವಿಪರೀತೋ ವಧಕ್ರಮಃ

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಅಹೋ (अहो, aho) = ಅಯ್ಯೋ, ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯ (oh, how strange)
- ಖಲಭುಜಂಗಸ್ಯ (खलभुजंगस्य, khalabhujaṃgasya) = ದುಷ್ಟನೆಂಬ ಹಾವಿನ (of the crooked serpent)
- ವಿಪರೀತೋ (विपरीतो, viparīto) = ತಲೆಕೆಳಗಾದ (reversed)
- ವಧಕ್ರಮಃ (वधक्रमः, vadhakramaḥ) = ಕೊಲ್ಲುವ ರೀತಿ (way of killing)
- ಅನ್ಯಸ್ಯ (अन्यस्य, anyasya) = ಒಬ್ಬನ (of one person)
- ದಶತಿ (दशति, daśati) = ಕಚ್ಚುತ್ತದೆ (it bites)
- ಶ್ರೋತ್ರಮನ್ಯಃ (श्रोत्रमन्यः, śrotramanyaḥ) = ಕಿವಿಯನ್ನು, ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬನು (the ear, another one)
- ಪ್ರಾಣೈರ್ವಿಯುಜ್ಯತೇ (प्राणैर्वियुज्यते, prāṇairviyujyate) = ಪ್ರಾಣಗಳಿಂದ ಬೇರ್ಪಡುತ್ತಾನೆ (is parted from his life breaths)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಅಯ್ಯೋ, ದುಷ್ಟನೆಂಬ ಹಾವಿನ ಕೊಲ್ಲುವ ರೀತಿಯೇ ಉಲ್ಟಾ. ಅದು ಒಬ್ಬನ ಕಿವಿಯನ್ನು ಕಚ್ಚುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಪ್ರಾಣ ಕಳೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವವನು ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
How strange is the way the crooked serpent kills. It bites the ear of one person, and another is the one who loses his life.
ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita
ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕಚ್ಚುವುದು ಎಂದರೆ ಕಿವಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳಿದ ಚಾಡಿ ಎಂದು ಓದಬಹುದು. ಕಿವಿಗೆ ವಿಷ ಹಾಕುವುದು ಎಂಬ ನುಡಿಗಟ್ಟು ನಮ್ಮ ಭಾಷೆಯಲ್ಲೂ ಇದೆ.
The bite can be read as a tale whispered into the ear. We have a similar phrase in Kannada, poison poured into the ear.
ವಿಪರೀತ ಎಂದರೆ ತಲೆಕೆಳಗು. ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಹಾವಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕಚ್ಚಿದ ಜಾಗವೇ ನೋಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕಚ್ಚುವ ಜಾಗ ಒಂದು, ಬಲಿಯಾಗುವವನು ಬೇರೆ ಎಂಬುದೇ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಚಮತ್ಕಾರ.
Viparita means upside down. With an ordinary snake the bitten spot is what hurts. The turn of the verse is that the bite lands in one place and the victim is someone else.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಯಾರಾದರೂ ಮತ್ತೊಬ್ಬರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಕೆಟ್ಟದ್ದನ್ನು ಕಿವಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳಿದರೆ, ಅದನ್ನು ಕೇಳುವ ನಾವು ಮೊದಲು ಹಾವಿನ ಕಚ್ಚುವ ಜಾಗವಾಗಿದ್ದೇವೆ ಎಂದು ಗಮನಿಸಬೇಕು. ಕೇಳದೆ ಇರುವುದೂ ಒಂದು ರಕ್ಷಣೆ.
When someone whispers ill of another, we who listen are the spot the snake has chosen. Not listening is itself a kind of protection.
ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಯ ತಂಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಿವಿಯಿಂದ ಕಿವಿಗೆ ಹರಡುವ ಮಾತು ಒಬ್ಬ ಸಹೋದ್ಯೋಗಿಯ ಹೆಸರನ್ನು ಹಾಳು ಮಾಡಬಹುದು. ಕೇಳಿದ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಅವರನ್ನೇ ಕೇಳಿ ಖಚಿತ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ಒಂದು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸ.
