- ದದ್ಯಾನ್ನ (दद्यान्न, dadyānna) = ಕೊಡಬೇಕು, ಆದರೆ ಬೇಡ (one may give, but not)

- ಮೂರ್ಖಸ್ಯ (मूर्खस्य, mūrkhasya) = ಮೂರ್ಖನ (of the fool)
It is the view of the wise that one may pay a hundred rather than quarrel. To pick a quarrel with no reason at all is the mark of a fool.
About this subhashita
Shatam dadyat means one may give a hundred. The verse does not say whether it is a hundred coins or a hundred words. The point is to bear a small loss.
Dvandva means a pair, and here a strife between two. Vina hetum means without a cause. The verse calls only the causeless quarrel foolish, not every quarrel.

For life today
When a small billing difference grows into an argument at a clinic, stepping back once saves the whole day. It helps to work out beforehand what a quarrel is worth.
The verse does not ask for silence where there is a cause, for instance where a patient’s safety is concerned. It asks us to drop only the causeless quarrel.
