ಪಂಗುನಿ ಉತ್ತಿರಂ ಎಂದರೆ ತಮಿಳು ಸೌರಮಾಸ ಪಂಗುನಿಯಲ್ಲಿ, ಅಂದರೆ ಮಾರ್ಚ್ ಮಧ್ಯದಿಂದ ಏಪ್ರಿಲ್ ಮಧ್ಯದವರೆಗೆ ಸೂರ್ಯ ಮೀನ ರಾಶಿಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ತಿಂಗಳಲ್ಲಿ, ಉತ್ತರ ಫಲ್ಗುಣಿ ನಕ್ಷತ್ರ, ತಮಿಳಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಉತ್ತಿರಂ, ಬರುವ ದಿನ. ಪಂಗುನಿಯ ಉತ್ತಿರಂ ಹುಣ್ಣಿಮೆಯ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ, ಮತ್ತು ಈ ದಿನವನ್ನು ಎಲ್ಲಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ದೇವತೆಗಳ ವಿವಾಹಗಳ ದಿನವೆಂದು ನೆನೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇದು ತಮಿಳುನಾಡಿನ ದೇವಾಲಯ ಉತ್ಸವ, ಶೈವ ಮತ್ತು ವೈಷ್ಣವ ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳೆರಡರಲ್ಲೂ ಆಚರಣೆ; ಕೇರಳದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದು ಶಬರಿಮಲೆಯ ಉತ್ಸವ ಸ್ನಾನದ ದಿನ.
ವಿವಾಹಗಳು
ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯ ಈ ದಿನಕ್ಕೆ ಹಲವು ವಿವಾಹಗಳನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ: ಶಿವ ಪಾರ್ವತಿಯರದು, ಮುರುಗ ಮತ್ತು ದೇವಸೇನೆಯದು, ತಮಿಳಿನಲ್ಲಿ ದೈವಾನೈ, ರಾಮ ಸೀತೆಯರದು, ಮತ್ತು ರಂಗನಾಥ ಆಂಡಾಳರದು. ಕಾಂಚೀಪುರದಲ್ಲಿ ಗೌರಿಯಾಗಿ ಪಾರ್ವತಿ ಶಿವನನ್ನು ವರಿಸಿದ್ದನ್ನು ಆಚರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ, ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ದಿನಕ್ಕೆ ಗೌರಿ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣ ಎಂದು ಹೆಸರು; ಏಕಾಂಬರೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಾಲಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಹದಿಮೂರು ದಿನಗಳ ಉತ್ಸವ. ಮದುರೈ ಬಳಿಯ, ಮುರುಗನ ಆರು ಪಡೈವೀಡುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದಾದ ತಿರುಪ್ಪರಂಕುಂಡ್ರಂನಲ್ಲಿ ಪಂಗುನಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅವನ ಮತ್ತು ದೈವಾನೈಯ ವಿವಾಹವನ್ನು ಸುಮಾರು ಎರಡು ವಾರಗಳ ಉತ್ಸವದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಆಚರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ; ಅದು ದಿವ್ಯ ದಂಪತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಉಯ್ಯಾಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೂರಿಸುವುದರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಮುಗಿಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಮದುವೆಯಾದ ಹೆಂಗಸರು ತಾಳಿ ಬದಲಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ, ಮದುವೆಯಾಗದವರು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಸಂಬಂಧಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ದಿನ ವಿವಾಹಕ್ಕೆ ಮೀಸಲಾದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅದನ್ನು ಗೃಹಸ್ಥ ಜೀವನಕ್ಕೆ, ಗೃಹಸ್ಥ ಧರ್ಮಕ್ಕೆ, ಸಲ್ಲುವ ಗೌರವವೆಂದು ತಿಳಿಯುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಶ್ರೀರಂಗ
ಶ್ರೀರಂಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಪಂಗುನಿ ಉತ್ತಿರಂ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ದೇವಿ ರಂಗನಾಯಕಿಯ ಜನ್ಮದಿನ; ರಂಗನಾಥ ಮತ್ತು ರಂಗನಾಯಕಿ ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಕಾಣುವ ವರ್ಷದ ಏಕೈಕ ದಿನ ಇದು, ಸೇರ್ತಿ ಮಂಟಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಲವು ಗಂಟೆಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಜೊತೆಯಾಗಿ ಕುಳಿತಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ದೇವಾಲಯ ಇದನ್ನು ಗಂಡ ಹೆಂಡತಿಯ ಜಗಳವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ: ರಂಗನಾಥ ಉರೈಯೂರಿನ ತನ್ನ ವಾರ್ಷಿಕ ಭೇಟಿಯಿಂದ ಮರಳುತ್ತಾನೆ, ರಂಗನಾಯಕಿ ಅವನನ್ನು ಒಳಗೆ ಬಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ದೀರ್ಘ ವಾಗ್ವಾದದ ನಂತರ ನಮ್ಮಾಳ್ವಾರ್ ಅವಳನ್ನು ಒಪ್ಪಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ರಾಮಾನುಜರು ತಮ್ಮ ಮೂರು ಗದ್ಯ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರಗಳಾದ ಗದ್ಯತ್ರಯವನ್ನು ಈ ದಿನ ಸೇರ್ತಿ ಮಂಟಪದ ಮುಂದೆ ರಚಿಸಿದರು ಎಂಬುದು ಶ್ರೀವೈಷ್ಣವ ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯ.

ಉತ್ರಂ ಅಯ್ಯಪ್ಪನ ಜನ್ಮನಕ್ಷತ್ರ. ಮಲಯಾಳಂ ಮೀನಂ ತಿಂಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಧ್ವಜಾರೋಹಣದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಆರಂಭವಾಗುವ ಶಬರಿಮಲೆಯ ಹತ್ತು ದಿನಗಳ ಉತ್ಸವ ಆ ನಕ್ಷತ್ರದ ಗೌರವಾರ್ಥ ನಡೆಯುವ ಆರಾಟ್ಟು, ಅಂದರೆ ದೇವರ ವಿಧಿವತ್ ಸ್ನಾನ, ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ಪರಾಕಾಷ್ಠೆ ತಲುಪುತ್ತದೆ. ತೈ ಪೂಸಂನಂತೆಯೇ ಪಂಗುನಿ ಉತ್ತಿರಂನಂದೂ ಮುರುಗನ ಭಕ್ತರು ಹರಕೆ ತೀರಿಸಲು ಕಾವಡಿ ಹೊರುತ್ತಾರೆ; ಅನೇಕ ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ರಥೋತ್ಸವ ಮತ್ತು ಅರುವತ್ತಮೂರು ನಾಯನ್ಮಾರರ, ಅಂದರೆ ಶೈವ ಸಂತರ, ಉತ್ಸವ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ತಿರುಮಲೆಯ ಬೆಟ್ಟಗಳಲ್ಲಿರುವ ತುಂಬುರು ತೀರ್ಥಕ್ಕೆ ಈ ದಿನ ಸ್ನಾನಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಯಾತ್ರಿಕರು ಬರುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಅನುದಿನ ಕೊಡುವ ದಿನ
ಸೂರ್ಯ ಮೀನ ರಾಶಿಯಲ್ಲಿರುವಾಗ ಸೂರ್ಯೋದಯಕ್ಕೆ ಉತ್ತರ ಫಲ್ಗುಣಿ ನಕ್ಷತ್ರ ಇರುವ ದಿನವನ್ನು ಅನುದಿನ ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಸೌರಮಾಸದಲ್ಲಿ ಆ ನಕ್ಷತ್ರ ಎರಡು ಬಾರಿ ಬಂದರೆ ಹುಣ್ಣಿಮೆಗೆ ಹತ್ತಿರದ್ದನ್ನು, ಅಂದರೆ ಸೂರ್ಯೋದಯದ ತಿಥಿ ಪೂರ್ಣಿಮೆಗೆ ಅತಿ ಹತ್ತಿರವಿರುವ ದಿನವನ್ನು ಇಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡು ಇನ್ನೊಂದನ್ನು ಬಿಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಸೌರಮಾಸ ಮತ್ತು ಚಾಂದ್ರಮಾಸ ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಹೆಜ್ಜೆ ಹಾಕುವುದಿಲ್ಲವಾದ್ದರಿಂದ ಆ ಹುಣ್ಣಿಮೆ ಕೆಲವು ವರ್ಷ ಫಾಲ್ಗುಣದ ಹುಣ್ಣಿಮೆ, ಕೆಲವು ವರ್ಷ ಚೈತ್ರದ್ದು. 2026ರಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ದಿನ ಏಪ್ರಿಲ್ 1, ಚೈತ್ರ ಹುಣ್ಣಿಮೆಯ ಪಕ್ಕ; ಅನುದಿನ ಕೊಡುವ ಮುಂದಿನ ದಿನಾಂಕ 2027ರ ಮಾರ್ಚ್ 22, ಫಾಲ್ಗುಣ ಹುಣ್ಣಿಮೆಯ ಪಕ್ಕ. ಪಂಗುನಿ ಉತ್ತಿರಂ ತಮಿಳು ಹಬ್ಬಗಳ ಪಟ್ಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿದೆ: ದಕ್ಷಿಣದ ಆಯ್ಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣುತ್ತದೆ, ಬೇರೆಡೆ ಇತರ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳ ಹಬ್ಬಗಳನ್ನು ತೆರೆದಾಗ ಕಾಣುತ್ತದೆ.
Panguni Uthiram is the day of the nakshatra Uttara Phalguni, Uthiram in Tamil, in the Tamil solar month of Panguni, the month the sun spends in Meena, from the middle of March to the middle of April. Uthiram in Panguni falls close to the full moon, and the day is remembered above all as the day of divine weddings. It is a temple festival of Tamil Nadu, kept in Shaiva and Vaishnava temples alike, and in Kerala it is the day of Sabarimala’s festival bath.
The weddings
Tradition places several marriages on this day: of Shiva and Parvati, of Murugan and Devasena, Deivanai in Tamil, of Rama and Sita, and of Ranganatha and Andal. At Kanchipuram the marriage of Parvati as Gauri to Shiva is celebrated, and the day is called Gauri Kalyanam there; the Ekambareswarar temple keeps a festival of thirteen days. At Thiruparankundram near Madurai, one of the six abodes of Murugan, his wedding to Deivanai is celebrated in Panguni with a festival of about two weeks, which ends with the divine pair seated on a swing; married women change their thali there, and the unmarried pray for a good match. Because the day is given to marriage, it is taken to honour the householder’s life, grihastha dharma.
Srirangam
At Srirangam Panguni Uthiram is kept as the birthday of Ranganayaki, the goddess of the temple, and it is the one day in the year on which Ranganatha and Ranganayaki are seen together, seated in the Serthi Mandapam for many hours. The temple tells it as a quarrel of husband and wife: Ranganatha comes back from his yearly visit to Uraiyur, Ranganayaki will not receive him, and after a long dispute Nammalvar persuades her to let him in. Sri Vaishnava tradition holds that Ramanuja composed his three prose hymns, the Gadya Trayam, before the Serthi Mandapam on this day.
Other observances
Uthram is Ayyappa’s birth star, and the ten-day festival at Sabarimala in the Malayalam month of Meenam, which opens with the hoisting of the flag, culminates in the arattu, the ritual bath of the deity, held in honour of that star. Murugan devotees carry kavadis on Panguni Uthiram to fulfil vows, as on Thai Poosam, and many temples hold car festivals and the festival of the sixty-three Nayanmars, the Shaiva saints. The Tumburu Tirtha in the hills of Tirumala draws pilgrims who bathe there on this day.
Which day Anudina gives
Anudina gives the day on which Uttara Phalguni is the nakshatra at sunrise while the sun is in Meena. If the solar month holds the nakshatra twice, Anudina keeps the one nearer the full moon, the day whose tithi at sunrise is closest to purnima, and drops the other. Because the solar month and the lunar month do not keep step, that full moon is the Phalguna full moon in some years and the Chaitra full moon in others. In 2026 the day was 1 April, beside the Chaitra full moon; the next date Anudina gives, 22 March 2027, is beside the Phalguna full moon. Panguni Uthiram is listed among the Tamil festivals: it appears under the South setting, and elsewhere when festivals of other regions are turned on.
