Context and commentary on verse 11.13
In the seventh verse Krishna had said ‘behold’, and here Arjuna ‘saw’. For Shankara ‘divided in many ways’ means the distinctions of gods, ancestors, humans and so on. Sridhara Swami says these parts were in one place as the limbs of his body.
Ramanuja gives a long list for this verse: the beings who experience, from Brahma down through gods, animals, humans and plants, the places of experience such as earth, sky, heaven and the netherworlds, the objects and means of experience, the whole world together with prakriti and the selves. For him the principle that the world is his body becomes a truth seen with the eyes here. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
Our own body is also a small world. In it more than thirty trillion cells do different kinds of work and together carry on a single life.
‘Divided in many ways, yet standing in one place’: different, yet together. A family or a society needs no better model than this.
