ದಿವಿ ಸೂರ್ಯಸಹಸ್ರಸ್ಯ ಭವೇದ್ಯುಗಪದುತ್ಥಿತಾ।
ಯದಿ ಭಾಃ ಸದೃಶೀ ಸಾ ಸ್ಯಾದ್ಭಾಸಸ್ತಸ್ಯ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ ॥ 12 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)
दिवि सूर्यसहस्रस्य भवेद्युगपदुत्थिता।
यदि भाः सदृशी सा स्याद्भासस्तस्य महात्मनः ॥ 12 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (English IAST)

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ದಿವಿ ಸೂರ್ಯಸಹಸ್ರಸ್ಯ (दिवि सूर्यसहस्रस्य, divi sūryasahasrasya) = ಆಕಾಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾವಿರ ಸೂರ್ಯರ (of a thousand suns in the sky)
- ಯುಗಪತ್ ಉತ್ಥಿತಾ ಭಾಃ ಯದಿ ಭವೇತ್ (युगपत् उत्थिता भाः यदि भवेत्, yugapat utthitā bhāḥ yadi bhavet) = ಒಮ್ಮೆಲೇ ಉದಯಿಸಿದ ಬೆಳಕು ಇದ್ದರೆ (if the light should rise all at once)
- ಸಾ ತಸ್ಯ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ ಭಾಸಃ (सा तस्य महात्मनः भासः, sā tasya mahātmanaḥ bhāsaḥ) = ಅದು ಆ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನ ಬೆಳಕಿಗೆ (it, to the light of that great being)
- ಸದೃಶೀ ಸ್ಯಾತ್ (सदृशी स्यात्, sadṛśī syāt) = ಸಮಾನವಾದೀತು (might perhaps be equal)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಆಕಾಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾವಿರ ಸೂರ್ಯರ ಬೆಳಕು ಒಮ್ಮೆಲೇ ಉದಯಿಸಿದರೆ, ಅದು ಆ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನ ಬೆಳಕಿಗೆ ಸಮಾನವಾದೀತು.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
If the light of a thousand suns were to rise all at once in the sky, that might resemble the light of that great being.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ 11.12ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 11.12
ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ‘ಯದಿ’, ಒಂದು ವೇಳೆ, ಎಂಬ ಪದ ಮುಖ್ಯ. ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಇದನ್ನು ಹೀಗೆ ಬಿಡಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ: ಸಾವಿರ ಸೂರ್ಯರ ಬೆಳಕು ಸಮಾನವಾದರೆ ಆದೀತು, ಆಗದಿದ್ದರೆ ವಿಶ್ವರೂಪದ ಬೆಳಕೇ ಹೆಚ್ಚು. ಶ್ರೀಧರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳು ನೇರವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ: ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಬೇರೆ ಹೋಲಿಕೆಯೇ ಇಲ್ಲ. ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಇದು ಅವನ ತೇಜಸ್ಸು ಅಳತೆಗೆ ಸಿಗದ್ದು, ಕ್ಷಯವಿಲ್ಲದ್ದು ಎಂದು ತೋರಿಸುವ ಮಾತು.
The word ‘yadi’, ‘if’, matters in this verse. Shankara unfolds it like this: the light of a thousand suns might resemble it, and if not, the light of the cosmic form surpasses it. Sridhara Swami says directly: there is no other comparison for it. According to Ramanuja the verse shows that his splendour is beyond measure and never wanes.
ಮಧ್ವಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ‘ಸಾವಿರ’ ಪದವನ್ನು ಅಕ್ಷರಶಃ ಓದಬಾರದು ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅದು ಅನಂತವನ್ನು ಸೂಚಿಸುವ ಪದ, ತಿಳಿಸುವುದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಮಾತ್ರ ಬಳಸಿದ ಹೋಲಿಕೆ. ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಅವರು ಋಗ್ವೇದದ ಖಿಲ ಭಾಗದ ಒಂದು ಮಾತನ್ನು ಉದ್ಧರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ: ಅವನು ಅನಂತ ಶಕ್ತಿ, ಅನಂತ ವೀರ್ಯ, ಅನಂತ ತೇಜಸ್ಸುಳ್ಳವನು. ಅಳತೆ ಹೇಳುವುದರಿಂದ ಏನೂ ಪ್ರಯೋಜನವಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬುದು ಅವರ ನಿಲುವು.
Madhva says the word ‘thousand’ is not to be read literally. It is a word that points to the infinite, a comparison used only to convey. For this he quotes a line from the Khila portion of the Rigveda: he is of infinite power, infinite valour and infinite splendour. His position is that stating a measure serves no purpose.
ಆಧಾರ: ಹಲವು ಮೂಲಗಳು. ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿರುವಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡೂ ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಓದುವಾಗ ಒಂದು ಆರೋಗ್ಯದ ಎಚ್ಚರವೂ ನೆನಪಾಗಬೇಕು. ಒಂದೇ ಸೂರ್ಯನನ್ನು ಬರಿಗಣ್ಣಿನಿಂದ ದಿಟ್ಟಿಸಿ ನೋಡಿದರೂ, ಗ್ರಹಣದ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲೂ, ಕಣ್ಣಿನ ಅಕ್ಷಿಪಟಲಕ್ಕೆ ಶಾಶ್ವತ ಹಾನಿಯಾಗಬಹುದು. ಅರ್ಜುನನಿಗೆ ದಿವ್ಯ ದೃಷ್ಟಿ ಬೇಕಾಯಿತು, ನಮಗೆ ಸರಿಯಾದ ಗ್ರಹಣ ಕನ್ನಡಕ ಬೇಕು.
Reading this verse should also bring a health caution to mind. Staring at even one sun with the naked eye, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage the retina. Arjuna needed a divine eye, and we need proper eclipse glasses.
ಕೆಲವು ಅನುಭವಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾತು ಹಿಡಿಯಲಾರದು. ಸಂಜಯನೂ ‘ಇದ್ದರೆ ಸಮಾನವಾದೀತು’ ಎಂದು ಮಾತ್ರ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಆ ವಿನಯ ದೊಡ್ಡದನ್ನು ವರ್ಣಿಸುವ ಸರಿಯಾದ ರೀತಿ.
Some experiences cannot be held by words. Even Sanjaya only says ‘if it were so, it might resemble’. That humility is the right way to describe what is great.
