Context and commentary on verse 11.14
Arjuna’s response comes in four stages: wonder, hair standing on end, a bow, and words spoken with joined palms. Shankara gives ‘pranamya’ the sense of bowing low, humbled. Ramanuja calls it a ‘dandavat’ prostration, the salutation made by lying full length on the ground.
According to Shankara, in the hymn that follows Arjuna lays open his own experience: ‘I see the cosmic form you have shown.’ Ramanuja holds what Arjuna saw in one sentence: the God of infinite auspicious qualities who bears and moves the whole world with one part of his body. For life today
In the first chapter Arjuna’s hair stood on end from fear (1.29), and here from wonder. The same bodily sign can come with fear and with devotion. The feeling differs, the response of the nervous system is the same.
When we see something great, the head bows of its own accord. The humility that comes before the stars in the sky or the birth of a new life is good for the mind.
