Context and commentary on verse 11.15
Sridhara Swami says that the seventeen verses from here to the thirty-first are Arjuna’s words. The metre changes here too: the anushtubh used so far gives way to the longer trishtubh. These long lines suit the excitement of telling what he sees. Shankara unfolds the list: the sages are Vasishtha and others, the serpents Vasuki and others. For him the ‘lotus seat’ is the seat with Mount Meru as the centre of the lotus that is the earth.
The acharyas read the line ‘brahmanam isham kamalasanastham’ differently. For Shankara and Sridhara Swami ‘isha’ qualifies Brahma: Brahma, the lord of creatures. Ramanuja sees two figures: the four-faced Brahma, ruler of the cosmic egg, and Isha, who abides in that lotus-seated Brahma. Both readings are given here. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
Different homes worship different gods. In the body Arjuna saw, all the gods were in one place.
If this picture is remembered, there is less room for quarrels in the name of God, in the family or in the neighbourhood.
