Context and commentary on verse 11.20
From here the colour of the cosmic form changes: ‘terrible’ comes along with ‘wondrous’. Shankara gives ‘ugra’ the sense of fierce, and takes the address ‘mahatman’ to mean one whose nature is not petty. According to him the verses that follow show the answer to the doubt of the second chapter, whether we shall win or they will. For Ramanuja ‘heaven’ and ‘earth’ point to all the worlds above and below. The three worlds that tremble, he says, are those who had gathered to watch the battle.
Madhva’s explanation here is distinctive. This form need not frighten everyone, he says: Narada felt no fear at it. He quotes the Varuna shakha: some rejoice on seeing that form and some are afraid. The gist of his words is that fear depends on the state of the seer’s mind. For ‘pervaded by you alone’ he points to a shruti that he fills the space between heaven and earth with a single form.

For life today
Madhva’s word that the same sight brings joy to some and fear to others is close to today’s psychology too. More than the event itself, the way we interpret it shapes what we feel.
The same hospital room is a place of fear for one person and a place of healing for another. When the way of seeing changes, the experience changes too.
