Context and commentary on verse 11.21
The acharyas read ‘are entering’ in three ways. For Shankara these ‘hosts of gods’ are the Vasus and other gods who were born as men to lighten the earth’s burden and are fighting here, and they are seen entering him. For Ramanuja they are gods who see him as the refuge of the universe and draw near him with joy. For Sridhara Swami they are those who take refuge in him out of fear.
Sridhara Swami pictures the frightened ones standing far off and pleading, ‘Victory, victory, protect us, protect us.’ According to Shankara the sages, seeing the ill omens at the time of battle, say ‘svasti’, may it be well with the world. For Ramanuja these great sages and siddhas know the truth of the higher and lower principles, and their praise is worthy of the Lord. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

Before the same sight, two kinds of prayer: the frightened ‘protect us’ and the calm ‘may all be well’. Both are prayers.
In a hospital waiting room there are those who pray for their own, and those who pray for the good of all the patients. The second prayer widens the heart.
