Context and commentary on verse 11.34
Here Krishna calls Arjuna’s fears by name. Shankara gives the reason for each name. Drona was the master of the science of archery, knew the divine weapons, and was Arjuna’s own teacher. Bhishma could choose the time of his death, and had fought Parashurama in single combat without defeat. Jayadratha’s father had won a boon by austerity: whoever made his son’s head fall to the ground would have his own head shattered. Karna held the unfailing shakti weapon given by Indra. Madhva too gives these same reasons for the names of Jayadratha and Karna.
Ramanuja links ‘ma vyathishthah’ to Arjuna’s pain in the first chapter: do not be distressed, out of fear of right and wrong, out of affection for kin or out of pity, asking how you can kill teachers and kinsmen. In the slaying of these offenders, he says, there is not even a trace of cruelty. Sridhara Swami sees this as the answer to the doubt of the second chapter, ‘na chaitad vidmah kataran no gariyah’ (2.6): ‘jetasi’, you will win.

For life today
Naming a fear and facing it is the first step to overcoming it. Krishna does not simply say ‘do not be afraid’, he gives each of Arjuna’s fears a name and answers it.
When talking with someone who is anxious, asking ‘What are you most afraid of?’ and discussing each fear one at a time helps more than saying ‘Nothing will happen’.
