Context and commentary on verse 11.35
Sanjaya speaks again. Shankara explains ‘sagadgadam’ at the level of the body: from fear comes the blow of sorrow, from affection the surge of joy. When the eyes fill with tears the throat tightens and the voice becomes faint and faltering. That is ‘gadgada’. Sridhara Swami too calls it the rush of fear and joy together.
Ramanuja calls Krishna here ‘ashritavatsalyajaladhi’, the ocean of tenderness towards those who take refuge in him. He takes the repetition ‘bhitabhita’ to mean exceedingly afraid. Arjuna’s body language, bowing once and then bowing low again before he speaks, tells his state of mind. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
A tightening throat and faltering words are not weakness. When feeling is intense the body responds like this. Letting tears come out is lighter for the mind than holding them back.
Even the hero Arjuna was choked with emotion. The saying that men must not cry finds no support in the Gita.
