Context and commentary on verse 11.53
The word of the forty-eighth verse returns here, this time as a prelude to the answer in the next verse. Shankara gives examples: all four Vedas, Rik, Yajus, Sama and Atharva, fierce austerity such as the chandrayana, gifts of cows, land and gold, sacrifice or worship. None of these is enough, and the next verse answers the question of how then it is possible.
Ramanuja reads it with the words ‘alone, without devotion’: study of the Vedas, teaching them, expounding, hearing, japa, sacrifice, gifts, homa and austerity cannot by themselves, without devotion, reveal him. For this he quotes the famous words of the Katha Upanishad: ‘nayam atma pravachanena labhyo na medhaya na bahuna shrutena’. This Self is not gained by discourse, nor by intellect, nor by much hearing, it is gained by the one whom he chooses. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

Not all who have read much know much. What opens the door to understanding is humility and love.
This is true in medicine too. Textbook knowledge is essential, but it works fully only when there is care for the patient.
