Context and commentary on verse 11.8
After three verses of ‘behold, behold’, Krishna states a truth: this eye is not enough. For Shankara ‘one’s own eye’ is the natural eye, and ‘sovereign yoga’ is the surpassing yogic power of the Lord. Ramanuja gives the reason: this eye grasps only limited objects with boundaries, not the one beyond all measure. For him ‘yoga’ means the union with infinite qualities such as knowledge and with infinite glories.
Sridhara Swami calls the divine eye ‘jnanatmaka’, an eye whose nature is knowledge. The sense he gives to ‘yoga’ is notable: the power to make the impossible possible. In the Mahabharata story Vyasa had given a similar divine sight to Sanjaya, and it is by that sight that he is telling this dialogue to Dhritarashtra. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
Our eyes have limits. Without a microscope germs are not seen, and without experience the faint shadow on an X-ray is not seen. Seeing needs preparation.
The divine eye is not an outer instrument, it is the eye of understanding, as Sridhara Swami says. A little reading and a little meditation every day slowly open that eye.
