Context and commentary on verse 11.9
Here the narration turns from the battlefield to the palace. Sanjaya describes the cosmic form to the blind king Dhritarashtra. As Sridhara Swami notes, six verses from here are Sanjaya’s words. Ramanuja adds a touching detail: the one showing this form is the same Krishna who sits in the charioteer’s seat, the son of Partha’s maternal uncle, Narayana who is the supreme Brahman.
Shankara gives the name ‘Hari’ the sense of Narayana. Madhva quotes the reason for the name from the Mokshadharma: he is ‘Hari’ because he is the one who receives the share of offerings in sacrifices, and also because his finest colour is ‘harita’. Shankara splits ‘mahayogeshvara’ as great and Lord of yoga.

For life today
Dhritarashtra, who has no sight, hears of this vision, and still his mind does not change. The blindness of the mind runs deeper than the blindness of the eyes.
Sanjaya’s work of showing the world through words to one without sight is a great one. Reading aloud and describing the way for those with poor sight is just as great a service today.
