Context and commentary on verse 15.11
Effort is in both, the fruit comes to only one. Where is the difference? According to Shankara the ‘akritatman’ are those who have not refined their minds through austerity and mastery of the senses, who have not turned away from misconduct, whose arrogance has not been quieted. Though they strive with scripture and the like, they do not see. Sridhara Swami says: he is hard to know, and even among the discerning only some see him.
Ramanuja finds the difference in surrender: those who strive in karma yoga and the like together with surrender to the Lord have their minds made pure and see the self, while the minds of those without surrender remain unrefined. Madhva calls the ‘akritatman’ those of impure understanding, and ‘yatantah’ those who strive after gaining knowledge.

For life today
Effort alone is not enough, the ground must be ready. As a field is ploughed before the seed is sown, conduct must be set right before meditation: that is the core of Shankara’s word.
When effort shows no fruit, disappointment is natural. At such times it is better to look at the preparation and seek the advice of the experienced than to change paths.
