Whether he is leaving the body or staying in it, or enjoying, joined with the gunas, the deluded do not see him. Those with the eye of knowledge see.

Context and commentary on verse 15.10

Why is he not seen though he is so near? There is a lament in Shankara’s words: ‘aho kashtam’, alas, the deluded do not see one who can be seen so clearly. The reason is that the pull of pleasures, seen and unseen, drags their minds in many directions. Only those with the eye of knowledge born of scripture see him. Sridhara Swami calls this the answer to the question ‘why does not everyone see?’

Ramanuja makes precise what is to be seen: the self, joined with bodily forms made of the gunas such as the human form, yet distinct from them, of the single form of knowledge. The deluded, who take the body to be the self, do not see it. Madhva introduces this as the answer to the question ‘then why is he not seen?’

For life today

Many have searched for their spectacles while they sat on top of their head. Sometimes it is what is nearest that goes unseen.

The ‘pull in many directions’ Shankara speaks of is still greater today. Staying for a while each day with one task, or with one person in full attention, is a practice that opens that eye.
