Context and commentary on verse 18.24
Ramanuja reads the word ‘va’ as ‘cha’, and, and catches the mind of rajasic action in its own words: doing it with the pride of ‘I myself am doing this so laborious task’. Sridhara Swami’s example is the deep-rooted ego of ‘what other Vedic scholar is my equal’.
Shankara gives a fine clarification of ‘sahankara’: this is not ego from the view of knowledge of the truth, but ego measured against a Vedic scholar in the world who is without ego. For the knower of the self, free of ego in the highest sense, there is neither desire for fruit nor strenuous agency. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
‘Bahulayasa’, excessive strain, mostly comes from haste for results or hunger for a name. Working at the cost of sleep and with the family pushed aside leads, in the long run, to burnout and illness.
The quality of work comes not from the amount of strain but from clarity of mind. Rest is also part of work.
