Context and commentary on verse 18.23
After knowledge, the three kinds of action. Shankara takes ‘niyata’ as daily duty, and ‘araga-dveshatah kritam’ as not driven by attraction or aversion. Sridhara Swami gives an example: not done out of love for one’s children or out of hatred for an enemy.
Ramanuja’s reading is practical: ‘niyata’ is what befits one’s station, ‘free from attachment’ is without attachment to agency and the like, and ‘without attraction or aversion’ is not done out of desire for fame or fear of disrepute, that is, without hypocrisy. Action done simply as ‘what ought to be done’, without intent on the fruit, is sattvic. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
Sattvic work mostly happens without noise: records kept on time, clean hands, a medicine dose checked twice. Even if no one praises it, it saves lives.
Ramanuja’s words ‘not even from fear of disrepute’ are notable: work done out of fear of criticism is not free either.
