Context and commentary on verse 18.72
At the end of the teaching the guru asks the disciple: have you understood? Sridhara Swami speaks of the compassion behind this question: he asks with the intention ‘if right understanding has not arisen, I will teach again’. For him ‘ajnanasammoha’ is the inverted understanding born of not knowing the truth.
Shankara states the purpose of the question: has that natural lack of discernment been destroyed, for the sake of which all this effort of hearing the teaching, yours and mine, was made? Ramanuja names the delusion directly: the ignorance under which, bewildered, you said ‘I will not fight’. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

After explaining, asking ‘have you understood’, or better still ‘tell me in your own words’, is a simple way to make sure medicine instructions have truly reached the patient.
Sridhara Swami’s spirit of ‘if it is not understood, I will tell it again’ is the mark of a patient teacher, and of patient parents.
