Context and commentary on verse 5.7
The commentators see an order in this verse. Yoga purifies the mind, a pure mind brings body and senses under control, and at last comes the vision of one self in all. The action of such a person does not bind him.
The acharyas unpack ‘sarva-bhutatma-bhutatma’ in different ways. For Shankara it is one who sees the consciousness within all beings, from Brahma down to a blade of grass, as his own self. Such a person of right vision is not bound even when he acts for the good of the world.
For Ramanuja it means sameness of nature. Distinctions such as god and human are modifications of prakriti. Seen apart from prakriti, every self has knowledge as its form, and so all are alike. He links this to the phrase ‘Brahman is even’ in verse 19.
Madhva opens the word another way. ‘Sarva-bhutatma-bhuta’ is the Supreme Lord, and the yogi here is one who knows that Lord to be his inner guide and support. So one word yields three meanings, from the standpoints of Advaita, Vishishtadvaita and Dvaita. Deciding which is right is not the work of this page.

For life today
Work does not cling to us because of its weight, but because of the ‘what is in it for me’ we look for in it. When we see in the person before us a life just like our own, that question loosens a little.
When a patient is seen as ‘a case’, it is enough that the work gets done. When seen as a person, one wants it done well. We fear the second way of seeing will add to the load. But it is also what gives the work its meaning.
