Context and commentary on verse 5.8
This verse and the next form one sentence. The last verse’s ‘not tainted even while acting’ may look like a contradiction. Sridhara Swami says these two verses show that it is none, because the sense of doership is absent.
Shankara gives the example of a mirage. Once a man knows there is no water in the mirage, he does not run there again to drink. In the same way, for one of right vision who sees only non-action in every movement of body and senses, no action remains to be done. So for him the renunciation of all action is natural.
Ramanuja reads it as a statement about the nature of the self. The self’s nature is knowledge alone. Doership in seeing, walking and the rest comes from the self’s connection with senses and vital breaths brought by past karma, not from its own nature. One who reflects thus thinks, ‘I am not the doer.’
Madhva only says that these two verses clarify the meaning of renunciation once more. Sridhara Swami matches each activity to its faculty: seeing and smelling are the work of the sense organs, walking of the feet, sleep of the intellect, breathing of the vital breath.

For life today
Our body does thousands of things without asking our permission. The heart beats about a hundred thousand times a day, the gut moves food along, the eyes blink. None of it needs the feeling ‘I am doing this’.
Think about it. When so much of the body’s work goes on perfectly well without the ‘I’, why do we load that ‘I’ onto the rest of our work? This verse teaches us to ask that question in the middle of the work itself.
