Context and commentary on verse 6.23
The long sentence begun in verse twenty ends here, and the Gita gives yoga a paradoxical definition: yoga is disjunction, separation from union with sorrow. Shankara calls this ‘naming by the contrary’. Sridhara Swami also gives another sense: it is yoga because it joins the knower of the field with the Supreme Self.
Madhva finds a subtlety in the word ‘union’. Yoga does not merely destroy sorrow that has arisen; it prevents sorrow from touching us at all. Sridhara Swami says that ‘sorrow’ here includes sense pleasure too, since it is mixed with sorrow.
The second half of the verse turns to the seeker. According to Shankara, the duty of yoga is stated again after its fruit has been told, to show that determination and an undiscouraged mind are both means of yoga. Ramanuja glosses ‘not losing heart’ as ‘with a glad mind’, especially at the beginning.

For life today
‘With a mind that does not lose heart’ applies to any long effort: a new habit, a treatment, physiotherapy exercises, trying to lose weight. Most people give up not because it is hard but because they grow weary of it.
Days without visible progress are the majority. Carrying on through those days is the determination the Gita speaks of. Setting small goals and noticing small wins help keep weariness away.
