Context and commentary on verse 6.24
This verse and the next form one sentence describing the inner sequence of meditation. For ‘without remainder’ Shankara gives ‘without residue’. Sridhara Swami says it means together with their latent impressions.
Ramanuja divides desires into two kinds, a very practical distinction. Those born of contact, such as cold and heat, cannot be avoided; only elation and agitation about them can be given up. Those born of intention, desires about children, grandchildren, fields and the like, can be given up in their very nature.
Madhva explains why both ‘all’ and ‘without remainder’ are used: even a desire for a single thing, small and occasional, should be given up. The ‘itself’ in ‘by the mind itself’, he says, shows that the senses can be restrained by the mind alone and by nothing else.

For life today
Ramanuja’s division is useful today too. Some experiences, like pain, tiredness and hunger, we cannot drop; we can only change our response to them. But desires we ourselves build up in the mind can be given up at the root.
Telling the two apart is half the work. Wearing ourselves out fighting what cannot be dropped, and struggling while clinging to what could be dropped, are both common among us.
