Context and commentary on verse 6.7
The fruit of a conquered mind is stated here. The word ‘samahita’ carries the sense of ‘rightly placed’. The outer pairs keep changing; what is within does not waver. The acharyas differ on who the ‘supreme self’ here is.
For Shankara, to such a renunciate the Supreme Self is present directly as his own self. He reads the second half of the verse as an injunction: in cold and heat, in honour and insult, he should remain even.
Ramanuja’s reading is distinctive. For him the ‘supreme self’ here is not God but the individual self established in its own nature. That is the subject of this section, and compared with its earlier states it is ‘supreme’. Or, he says, one can read ‘the self is supremely composed’.
For Madhva the Supreme Self becomes present in the heart, that is, he becomes a direct knower. Sridhara Swami gives both readings: his self alone stays rooted in itself amid these pairs, or the Supreme Self abides in his heart.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
It is worth noticing that honour and dishonour are placed in the same line as cold and heat. People’s opinions change as the weather does. We can dress suitably for both, but we cannot control either.
It is not easy to stay unpuffed on a day of praise and unshrunk on a day of criticism. But it helps a little to remember that both are the weather outside, not the house within.
