Context and commentary on verse 6.8
The pair ‘jnana’ and ‘vijnana’ recurs in the Gita. For Shankara jnana is understanding what the scriptures teach, vijnana is making what one has understood one’s own experience. Sridhara Swami says the same: knowledge from instruction, and wisdom of direct experience. From the two comes the contentment of ‘this is enough’.
Many give ‘kutastha’ the sense of a blacksmith’s anvil, which takes blows and stays unchanged. Madhva opens ‘kuta’ as space, and reads it as one who stands changeless like space. For him ‘vijnana’ means special knowledge, direct knowledge.
For Ramanuja jnana is knowledge of the self’s nature, vijnana the knowledge that it is of a different kind from prakriti. ‘Kutastha’ means one established in the self whose form is knowledge, the same through every state, god or human. Since the things of prakriti are not objects of enjoyment for him, clod, stone and gold serve him alike. Such a yogi of action is fit for the practice of seeing the self; that is his reading.

For life today
That a clod, a stone and gold are the same may sound like exaggeration. But the evenness here is not ignorance of value but freedom from its grip: knowing what gold is worth and still not losing sleep over it.
Contentment does not come until what we have read comes down into life. The more book knowledge grows, the more one may feel ‘I need more’. One small truth that has become experience quiets that hunger.
