Even when kicked, even when struck with a stout stick, the snake kills whomever it touches with its fang. In the same way this slanderer, human in form and as if for joy, touches one man at the ear and destroys another, root and all.
About this subhashita
The verb sprishati comes twice. The snake touches with its fang, and the slanderer touches an ear. In both the touching is a small act and the result is large.
Samula means with the root. The verse shows the difference that one man’s ear is touched while another is destroyed, by setting them in its two halves.

For life today
Not believing on the same day what reaches our ear about someone, and where possible asking the person himself, is a simple habit.
In today’s phone groups a message reaches a hundred people in a moment. Pausing once before passing it on is one way of not becoming the fang ourselves.
