Setting pride aside, a bow to both the bad man and the good, one of utterly crooked nature, the other of utterly straight and virtuous nature. Towards the first, out of fear, no hostile feeling is kept. The second is bowed to out of love, for he is a vessel of the highest peace.

About this subhashita

In the compound nitantakutilapragunasvabhavau two opposite words stand together, kutila and praguna. One is crooked, the other straight. A single dual form speaks of both men.

The sting of the verse is that the bow is the same but the reason differs. Bowing to the wicked man seems to be not respect but the prudence of avoiding a quarrel with him.

For life today

Not all courtesy is respect. Sometimes it is a way of avoiding a quarrel. We ought to know for ourselves which kind our courtesy is.

Keeping some distance along with the bow can be called prudence. But it is equally important not to label every stern person as wicked.
