This is a hymn to Ganesha, eight verses asking for release from the burden of debt. Each verse recalls someone who worshipped Ganesha before setting out on a great task: Brahma, Shiva, Vishnu, the Goddess, Kumara, the Sun, the Moon and Vishvamitra. The last line is the same every time, a request that the son of Parvati always destroy the reciter’s debt.
After the eight verses comes a phalashruti which gives a fifteen-syllable mantra and the counts for its repetition. We give a Kannada and an English meaning for each verse. The ritual section printed alongside the text in the source is not reproduced here, and we say more about that below.

At the beginning of creation Brahma worshipped him well, so that his work would come to fruit. May that son of Parvati always destroy my debt. - 2 ತ್ರಿಪುರಾಸುರನ ವಧೆಗೆ ಮೊದಲು ಶಂಭು, ಅಂದರೆ ಶಿವನೇ, ಅವನನ್ನು ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ಪೂಜಿಸಿದನು. ಪಾರ್ವತೀಪುತ್ರನು ಸದಾ ನನ್ನ ಋಣವನ್ನು ಕಳೆಯಲಿ.
Before the slaying of Tripura, Shambhu, that is Shiva himself, duly worshipped him. May the son of Parvati always destroy my debt. - 3 ಹಿರಣ್ಯಕಶಿಪು ಮೊದಲಾದ ಅಸುರರನ್ನು ಸಂಹರಿಸಬೇಕಾಗಿ ವಿಷ್ಣುವು ಅವನನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸಿದನು. ಪಾರ್ವತೀಪುತ್ರನು ಸದಾ ನನ್ನ ಋಣವನ್ನು ಕಳೆಯಲಿ.
For the slaying of Hiranyakashipu and the others like him, Vishnu worshipped him. May the son of Parvati always destroy my debt. - 4 ಮಹಿಷಾಸುರನ ವಧೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ದೇವಿಯು ಗಣಗಳ ಒಡೆಯನನ್ನು ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಪೂಜಿಸಿದಳು. ಪಾರ್ವತೀಪುತ್ರನು ಸದಾ ನನ್ನ ಋಣವನ್ನು ಕಳೆಯಲಿ.
At the slaying of Mahisha the Goddess worshipped the lord of the ganas with full honour. May the son of Parvati always destroy my debt. - 5 ತಾರಕಾಸುರನ ವಧೆಗೆ ಮೊದಲು ಕುಮಾರನು, ಅಂದರೆ ಸ್ಕಂದನು, ಅವನನ್ನು ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಪೂಜಿಸಿದನು. ಪಾರ್ವತೀಪುತ್ರನು ಸದಾ ನನ್ನ ಋಣವನ್ನು ಕಳೆಯಲಿ.
Before the slaying of Taraka, Kumara, that is Skanda, worshipped him with full honour. May the son of Parvati always destroy my debt. - 6 ತನ್ನ ಹೊಳಪು ಸಿದ್ಧಿಸಲೆಂದು ಭಾಸ್ಕರನು, ಅಂದರೆ ಸೂರ್ಯನು, ಗಣೇಶನನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸಿದನು. ಪಾರ್ವತೀಪುತ್ರನು ಸದಾ ನನ್ನ ಋಣವನ್ನು ಕಳೆಯಲಿ.
It was to gain his own radiance that Bhaskara, the Sun, worshipped Ganesha. May the son of Parvati always destroy my debt. - 7 ತನ್ನ ಕಾಂತಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚಲೆಂದು ಚಂದ್ರನು ಗಣನಾಯಕನನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸಿದನು. ಪಾರ್ವತೀಪುತ್ರನು ಸದಾ ನನ್ನ ಋಣವನ್ನು ಕಳೆಯಲಿ.
To increase his own brightness the Moon worshipped the leader of the ganas. May the son of Parvati always destroy my debt. - 8 ತನ್ನ ತಪಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಕಾಪಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲೆಂದು ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರನು ಅವನನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸಿದನು. ಪಾರ್ವತೀಪುತ್ರನು ಸದಾ ನನ್ನ ಋಣವನ್ನು ಕಳೆಯಲಿ.
To guard his own austerities Vishvamitra worshipped him. May the son of Parvati always destroy my debt.
This debt-removing hymn destroys severe poverty. With a collected mind one should recite it once a day for one year.
Freed from dire poverty, he comes to the wealth of Kubera. This great mantra, which ends in phat, has fifteen syllables and a meaning of its own, or, on another reading, fifteen and a half syllables.
Om Ganesha, cut away my debt, O most excellent one, hum namah phat. This mantra is to be recited at the end of the hymn, and then, with a pure mind, the repetition begins.
A preliminary observance of twenty-one repetitions is prescribed. By repeating it properly a thousand times for six months one becomes dear to Ganesha.
He becomes the equal of Brihaspati in knowledge and a lord of wealth in riches. For this same mantra a preliminary observance of ten thousand repetitions is also prescribed. - 14 ಒಂದು ಲಕ್ಷ ಬಾರಿ ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ಜಪಿಸಿದರೆ ಬೇಡಿದ ಫಲ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ. ನೆನೆದ ಮಾತ್ರಕ್ಕೇ ಭೂತ, ಪ್ರೇತ ಮತ್ತು ಪಿಶಾಚಿಗಳು ನಾಶವಾಗುತ್ತವೆ.
By a hundred thousand repetitions done properly one obtains the fruit one has asked for. Bhutas, pretas and pishachas are destroyed by the mere remembrance of it.
ಈ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this hymn
The sources place this hymn in the Krishnayamala Tantra, and tradition describes it as a fragment of a dialogue between Uma and Maheshvara. No author is named anywhere. Tantric works are hard to date, so nothing certain can be said about the age of this hymn.
The structure is simple. Eight verses recall eight occasions when someone worshipped Ganesha first, the first five tied to the slaying of demons and the next three to requests made by the Sun, the Moon and Vishvamitra. The last line is identical in every verse, and we have translated it in full in verse 1 and briefly thereafter. All the verses are in the anushtubh metre.
The word runa means both money owed and, in its older sense, an obligation one carries, and both senses are audible here. The phalashruti, verses 9 to 14, gives the fifteen-syllable mantra and the counts for its repetition: twenty-one, a thousand, ten thousand and a hundred thousand. In verse 10 we read sartha as ‘with a meaning’, though another reading, sardha, gives ‘fifteen and a half syllables’.
Alongside the hymn the source page also prints a ritual section, that is the viniyoga, the kara-nyasa, the shadanga-nyasa, a dhyana verse and the panchopachara line. We give only the hymn and its phalashruti. Editions also pair the half lines of the phalashruti differently, which changes the verse count, and we follow a text of fourteen verses.
ಆಧಾರ: ಹಲವು ಮೂಲಗಳು. ಆವೃತ್ತಿಗಳು ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿರುವಲ್ಲಿ ಅದನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಸೂಚಿಸಿದ್ದೇವೆ. · Sources: several. Where readings differ, the difference is noted here.
ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
There are still households that keep a ledger in a kitchen drawer. The milk account, the money borrowed from a neighbour, the instalment that falls due, all of it ends up on the same pages. Many people know the small weight in the chest that comes just before opening it.
What the hymn asks for is that the debt on those pages should come down. Yet the word runa also points to obligation, what we owe to parents, to teachers, to those who stood by us in a hard time. We ask for the first to grow lighter, and the second we would rather keep.
