Kavacha means the armour a warrior puts on before battle. The idea behind this hymn is that the one who recites it wraps the names of Nrisimha about himself. Our source says it was spoken by the boy Prahlada, who survived the cruelty of his own father.

The first six verses hold the meditation on Nrisimha seated on a golden throne, his left side embraced by Lakshmi. Then comes the plea that he guard each limb from head to foot, and after that the eight directions. At the end stands the phalashruti, and then one long verse in a grander metre picturing the roaring lion form.

The source names Prahlada as the speaker, and its colophon places the hymn in the Brahmanda Purana

Nrisimha Kavacha, Sri Nrisimha Kavacham, and the Nrisimha Kavacha of Prahlada

Anushtubh, with the last verse in shardulavikridita

In daily recitation in the morning, on Nrisimha Jayanti, and in times of fear and difficulty

I shall speak the Nrisimha Kavacha, which Prahlada uttered long ago. It gives every kind of protection, it is holy, and it destroys all afflictions.
It gives all prosperity too, and grants both heaven and liberation. Having meditated on Nrisimha, the lord of the gods, seated on a golden throne,
him with open mouth and three eyes, shining like the autumn moon, his left side embraced by Lakshmi, attended on every side by the forms of his own glory,
four armed, tender of limb, resplendent with golden earrings, his chest graced by a lotus, marked with jewelled armlets,
like molten gold in hue, clad in spotless yellow cloth, and by the light of the sparkling rubies set in the crowns of Indra and the other gods
his two feet made radiant, holding conch and discus and his other weapons, praised humbly by Garuda, filled with joy,
one should seat him in the lotus of his own heart and then recite the armour. May Nrisimha, who arose of himself to protect the worlds, guard my head.
May he who is everywhere and yet dwelt in the pillar guard my forehead and my voice. May Nrisimha, whose eyes are moon, sun and fire, guard my eyes.
May Nrihari, who loves the praise of the best of sages, guard my memory. May he who has the nose of a lion guard my nose, and may he to whom the face of Lakshmi is dear guard my face.
May Nrisimha, master of all learning, guard my tongue. May he of the moonlike countenance, whom Prahlada ever salutes, guard my mouth.
May Nrisimha guard my throat. May he who put an end to the burden of the earth guard my shoulders. May Nrisimha, whose arms shine with divine weapons, guard my arms.

About this hymn

This is a hymn of the armour type. The text we print is from stotranidhi.com, whose closing line places it in the Brahmanda Purana. Tradition holds that Prahlada spoke it, though there is no ground for dating it closely. There are thirty one verses in all, in anushtubh, with the last in shardulavikridita.

The plan of the hymn is clear. Verses one to six are the opening and the meditation, verses seven to nineteen the armour proper, naming in turn the head, forehead, eyes, memory, nose, face, tongue, throat, shoulders, arms, hands, heart, middle, navel, hips, private parts, thighs, knees, calves and feet, and then the eight directions. Verses twenty to thirty are the phalashruti, and the thirty first is a single long verse on the roaring lion form.

Verses twenty two and twenty three speak of affliction by the planets, of the poison of scorpions and snakes, and of brahmarakshasas, and the twenty ninth says that even diseases of the belly go when consecrated water is drunk. These lines show the everyday fears of the time in which they were composed, and we have translated them as they stand. Prayer and recitation are not a substitute for medical treatment.

On the text: the forms hatantam and rupyantam in the thirty first verse are unusual, and we give only their gist, leaping and tearing. In the nineteenth verse we take samsarabhayadah as one who strikes fear into worldly existence, while many keep the reading samsarabhayatah and read it as a prayer to be guarded from the fear of worldly existence. The thirteenth verse calls Hiranyakashipu by the name Hiranyaksha, and we have kept the word of the source.

For life today

A night watchman walks one round of the compound with a torch and turns the light into every corner. On most nights there is nothing there, yet it is that round which lets the people inside sleep.

This armour works in much the same way. Going part by part from head to foot and quarter by quarter through the directions, the recitation gives our fears a name, and a fear that has been named grows a little smaller.
