O Shankara, my teacher, protect me. I am your servant, dull of mind and humble, attached to perishable objects and gripped by the fear of worldly existence.
You were born on the bank of the Purna, you have ground masses of sin to dust, you are adorned with the saffron robe, and your hand holds the chinmudra.
You are a moon to the ocean of Vedanta, you have driven out desire and brought all the senses under control, and you are the refuge of all who have faith.
You made your dwelling on the Shringa hill, you took refuge in Shiva who wears the moon, you tend the company of devotees, and you are praised by Bharati Tirtha.
About this hymn
This is a song from the Shankara Bhagavatpada group on the website of the Sringeri Sri Sharada Peetham. The source names no author, so we name none. We give no date either.
The source gives the raga as Hamsanandi and the tala as Rupaka. The pallavi is two lines and each charana has two lines. It is the usual way of such songs to return to the pallavi after each charana.
We took the bank of the Purna to mean the river of that name in Kerala. In charana 3 we took the word shritashashimaulisha to mean one who took refuge in Shiva. It may also be read as one sheltered by Shiva.
The name of Bharati Tirtha comes at the close. The text shows him as one who praises, and we add nothing beyond that. We give the text as we received it.

For life today
On a day that threatens rain, it is common to carry an umbrella along. It does not stop the rain, but it helps us walk through it.
The pallavi of this song states its own weakness and fear plainly and asks for shelter. It seems to us that naming our fear without hiding it gives the mind a kind of shelter.
