ಇದೊಂದು ತುಂಗಭದ್ರಾ ನದಿಯನ್ನು ದೇವಿಯಾಗಿ ಸ್ತುತಿಸುವ ಒಂಬತ್ತು ಶ್ಲೋಕಗಳ ಸ್ತುತಿ. ಮೂಲದ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಇದು ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾಂಡ ಪುರಾಣದ ತುಂಗಭದ್ರಾ ಮಾಹಾತ್ಮ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಮೊದಲ ನಾಲ್ಕು ಶ್ಲೋಕಗಳನ್ನು ವಿಭಾಂಡಕ ಮುನಿ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ, ಉಳಿದ ಐದನ್ನು ಮಾಂಡವ್ಯ ಮುನಿ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ.
This is a hymn of nine verses that praises the river Tungabhadra as a goddess. Per the source it belongs to the Tungabhadra Mahatmya of the Brahmanda Purana. The sage Vibhandaka speaks the first four verses and the sage Mandavya the remaining five.
ಆರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿ ನದಿಯನ್ನು ವರಾಹನ ದೇಹದಿಂದ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದವಳೆಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಗಿದೆ. ನಂತರ ಅವಳನ್ನು ಸರಸ್ವತಿ, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಿ, ಪಾರ್ವತಿ, ಶಚಿಯರ ರೂಪವೆಂದೂ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಯೆಲ್ಲದರ ರೂಪವೆಂದೂ ಹೇಳಿ, ದರ್ಶನ, ಸ್ಪರ್ಶ, ಪಾನ, ಸ್ನಾನಗಳ ಫಲವನ್ನು ಹೇಳಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಕೊನೆಯ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಸ್ನಾನ ಮಾಡುವವರ ಇಷ್ಟಫಲವನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.
At the start the river is called one born from the body of Varaha. She is then spoken of as the form of Sarasvati, Lakshmi, Parvati and Shachi, and as the form of all creation, and the fruits of seeing, touching, drinking and bathing are declared. The last verse speaks of what bathers wish for and receive.

- 1 ವರಾಹನ ದೇಹದಿಂದ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದವಳೇ, ಪರ್ವತದ ಮಗಳೇ, ಪಾಪಗಳನ್ನು ಮುರಿಯುವವಳೇ. ಓ ದೇವಿ, ನಿನ್ನ ದರ್ಶನದಿಂದಲೇ ಮಹಾಪಾಪಿಗಳಿಗೂ ಮುಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಕೊಡುತ್ತೀಯೆ.
O you who were born from the body of Varaha, daughter of the mountain, breaker of sins. O goddess, by the mere sight of you, you grant liberation even to great sinners. - 2 ನೀನು ವಾಗ್ದೇವಿ, ಮಹಾಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಿ, ಗಿರಿಜೆ ಮತ್ತು ಶಚಿ. ಓ ದೇವೇಶಿ, ನೀನು ಸೂರ್ಯನ ಪ್ರಭೆ, ಚಂದ್ರನ ಕಿರಣ.
You are Vagdevi, Mahalakshmi, Girija and Shachi. O queen of the gods, you are the radiance of the sun and the ray of the moon. - 3 ಮೇಘಕ್ಕೆ ಮಿಂಚು ಹೇಗೋ ಹಾಗೆ ನೀನೇ ವಿಷ್ಣುವಿನ ಮಾಯೆ. ಹುಲ್ಲು, ಪೊದೆ, ಬಳ್ಳಿ, ಮರ, ಸಿದ್ಧರು ಮತ್ತು ದೇವತೆಗಳು ನಿನ್ನ ರೂಪಗಳೆಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗಿದೆ.

O maya of Vishnu, of Vishnu’s form, dear to Vishvaksena, sinless, supporter of the world, wide-eyed one with shining banks. Look upon me with delight and make me free of sin. - 7 ನಿನ್ನ ಗಾಳಿ ಬೀಸಿದ ಜೀವಿಗಳು ಪಾಪ ತೊಳೆದು ಶುದ್ಧರಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹಾಗಿರುವಾಗ ದರ್ಶನ, ಸ್ಪರ್ಶ, ಪಾನಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೇಳಬೇಕಾದದ್ದು ಇನ್ನೇನಿದೆ?
Beings fanned by your breeze become free of stain and sin. What more remains to be said of seeing you, touching you or drinking your water? - 8 ಕಂಡರೆ ನೂರು ಜನ್ಮದ ಪಾಪ, ಮುಟ್ಟಿದರೆ ಮುನ್ನೂರು ಜನ್ಮದ ಪಾಪ, ಕುಡಿದರೆ ಸಾವಿರ ಜನ್ಮದ ಪಾಪ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಓ ಮಂಗಳೆ, ಆ ಪಾಪವನ್ನು ನಾಶ ಮಾಡು.
Sin of a hundred births by seeing, of three hundred births by touching, and of a thousand births by drinking is the measure given. People who bathe wishing for sons, a wife, wealth, grain, cattle and clothing obtain those fruits with ease. After enjoying them they go to the abode of Hari for as long as the moon and stars endure.

This is a hymn from the website of the Sringeri Sri Sharada Peetham. By the source heading it comes from the Tungabhadra Mahatmya of the Brahmanda Purana. The source tells us that verses 1 to 4 are spoken by Vibhandaka and verses 5 to 9 by Mandavya. We give no date.

In this text the river is called Girija, Vedagirija and Haridehaja. Verses 6 and 9 have three lines and the rest have two.

The second line of verse 3 is terse. We chose the sense that everything from grass and trees to the gods is a form of the goddess. Verses 4 and 8 speak of the fruits of seeing, touching, drinking and bathing, and we say only that. The Kannada text was converted mechanically from Devanagari, so a few spellings may contain slips.

ಬಿಸಿಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಹಗ್ಗದ ಮೇಲೆ ಒಣಗುತ್ತಿರುವ ಒಗೆದ ಬಟ್ಟೆಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದಾಗ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಹಗುರವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ತೊಳೆದದ್ದು ಸ್ವಚ್ಛವಾಯಿತು ಎಂಬ ಸಮಾಧಾನ ಅಲ್ಲಿದೆ.
The sight of washed clothes drying on a line in the sun makes the mind feel lighter. There is the quiet satisfaction of something made clean.
ಈ ಸ್ತುತಿ ಹಳೆಯ ಹೊರೆಗಳನ್ನು ತೊಳೆದು ಹೊಸದಾಗಿ ಆರಂಭಿಸುವ ಆಸೆಯನ್ನು ನದಿಯ ಮುಂದೆ ಇಡುತ್ತದೆ. ನಾವೂ ದಿನದ ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಮ್ಮ ತಪ್ಪುಗಳನ್ನು ಒಪ್ಪಿಕೊಂಡು ಮರುದಿನ ಹೊಸ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಿಂದ ಹೊರಡಬಹುದು.
The hymn lays before the river the wish to wash away old burdens and begin afresh. We too can acknowledge our mistakes at the end of a day and set out the next morning with a fresh mind.
