ವೈದ್ಯನಾಥ ಎಂದರೆ ವೈದ್ಯರ ಒಡೆಯ. ಈ ಅಷ್ಟಕ ಶಿವನನ್ನು ರೋಗ ಹರಿಸುವ ದೇವವೈದ್ಯನಾಗಿ ಸ್ತುತಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಪ್ರತಿ ಶ್ಲೋಕವೂ “ಶ್ರೀವೈದ್ಯನಾಥಾಯ ನಮಃ ಶಿವಾಯ” ಎಂಬ ನಮನದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಮುಗಿಯುತ್ತದೆ.
Vaidyanatha means the lord of physicians. This ashtaka praises Shiva as the divine physician who takes away disease. Every verse closes with the salutation “Śrī Vaidyanāthāya namaḥ Śivāya”.
ಈ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರ ತಮಿಳುನಾಡಿನ ವೈತೀಶ್ವರನ್ ಕೋಯಿಲ್ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರಿದ್ದು. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿವ ವೈದ್ಯನಾಥನಾಗಿ, ದೇವಿ ಬಾಲಾಂಬಿಕೆಯಾಗಿ ನೆಲೆಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಕೆಳಗೆ ಎಂಟು ಶ್ಲೋಕಗಳ ಮತ್ತು ಫಲಶ್ರುತಿಯ ಅರ್ಥವನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ.
The hymn belongs to the shrine of Vaitheeswaran Koil in Tamil Nadu, where Shiva is worshipped as Vaidyanatha and the goddess as Balambika. Below we give the meaning of the eight verses and the closing verse of benefits.

- 1 ಶ್ರೀರಾಮ, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ, ಜಟಾಯು, ವೇದ, ಆರು ಮುಖಗಳ ಸ್ಕಂದ, ಸೂರ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಕುಜ (ಮಂಗಳ ಗ್ರಹ) ಇವರೆಲ್ಲರೂ ಪೂಜಿಸಿದ, ನೀಲಕಂಠನಾದ, ದಯೆಯೇ ತುಂಬಿರುವ ಶ್ರೀ ವೈದ್ಯನಾಥನಿಗೆ, ಮಂಗಳಕರನಾದ ಶಿವನಿಗೆ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ.

To him who removes the torment of evil spirits, the sorrow, distress and fear of those who wear on their bodies the water of his sacred tank, its earth and the holy ash, to him who is the very Self within all embodied beings: salutation to Shiva, Sri Vaidyanatha. - 8 ನೀಲಕಂಠನಾದ, ವೃಷಭದ ಧ್ವಜವುಳ್ಳ, ಹೂಮಾಲೆ, ಗಂಧ, ಭಸ್ಮ ಮೊದಲಾದವುಗಳಿಂದ ಶೋಭಿಸುವ, ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಮಕ್ಕಳು, ಪತ್ನಿ ಮೊದಲಾದ ಸೌಭಾಗ್ಯವನ್ನು ಕೊಡುವ ಶ್ರೀ ವೈದ್ಯನಾಥನಾದ ಶಿವನಿಗೆ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ.
To the blue-throated one whose banner bears the bull, who shines with garlands, sandal paste, ash and the like, who grants the good fortune of worthy children, a wife and more: salutation to Shiva, Sri Vaidyanatha. - 9 ಬಾಲಾಂಬಿಕೇಶ (ಬಾಲಾಂಬಿಕೆಯ ಒಡೆಯ), ವೈದ್ಯೇಶ (ವೈದ್ಯರ ಒಡೆಯ), ಭವರೋಗಹರ (ಸಂಸಾರವೆಂಬ ರೋಗವನ್ನು ಹರಿಸುವವನು) ಎಂಬ ಈ ಮೂರು ಹೆಸರುಗಳನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿದಿನ ಜಪಿಸಬೇಕು. ಇದು ಮಹಾರೋಗಗಳನ್ನು ನಿವಾರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
Balambikesha (lord of Balambika), Vaidyesha (lord of physicians) and Bhavarogahara (remover of the disease of worldly existence): one should chant these three names every day. It wards off great diseases.
ಈ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this hymn
ಈ ಅಷ್ಟಕದ ಕರ್ತೃ ತಿಳಿದಿಲ್ಲ. ನಾವು ಬಳಸಿದ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರನಿಧಿಯ ಪಾಠದ ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾರ ಹೆಸರೂ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಕೆಲವು ಭಜನೆ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು ಇದನ್ನು ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ಹೆಸರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಡುತ್ತವೆ, ಆದರೆ ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಗಟ್ಟಿಯಾದ ಆಧಾರ ನಮಗೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿಲ್ಲ.
The author of this ashtaka is unknown. The stotranidhi.com text we follow names no one in its colophon. Some song books print it under the name of Shankaracharya, but we have found no firm basis for that.
ವೈತೀಶ್ವರನ್ ಕೋಯಿಲ್ (ಪುಳ್ಳಿರುಕ್ಕುವೇಳೂರ್) ತಮಿಳುನಾಡಿನ ಸೀರ್ಕಾಳಿಯ ಬಳಿ ಇದೆ. ರಾಮ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣರು ಜಟಾಯುವಿನ ಅಂತ್ಯಸಂಸ್ಕಾರವನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾಡಿದರು, ಅಂಗಾರಕ (ಕುಜ) ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಪೂಜಿಸಿ ರೋಗದಿಂದ ಮುಕ್ತನಾದ, ಸ್ಕಂದ, ಸೂರ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ವೇದಪುರುಷರೂ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿವನನ್ನು ಆರಾಧಿಸಿದರು ಎಂದು ಸ್ಥಳಪುರಾಣ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಮೊದಲ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಹೆಸರುಗಳ ಪಟ್ಟಿ ಈ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನೇ ನೆನಪಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
Vaitheeswaran Koil (Pullirukkuvelur) lies near Sirkazhi in Tamil Nadu. The temple legend says that Rama and Lakshmana performed the last rites of Jatayu here, that Angaraka (Mars) worshipped here and was freed of disease, and that Skanda, the Sun and the Vedas also worshipped Shiva at this place. The list of names in the first verse recalls this legend.
ವೈದ್ಯನಾಥ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರು ಜಾರ್ಖಂಡಿನ ದೇವಘರ್ ಜ್ಯೋತಿರ್ಲಿಂಗಕ್ಕೂ ಮಹಾರಾಷ್ಟ್ರದ ಪರಳಿ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಕ್ಕೂ ಇದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಫಲಶ್ರುತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಬಾಲಾಂಬಿಕೆಯ ಹೆಸರು ಈ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರವನ್ನು ತಮಿಳುನಾಡಿನ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಜೋಡಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಏಳನೆಯ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ತೀರ್ಥ, ಮಣ್ಣು ಮತ್ತು ಭಸ್ಮ ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ಪ್ರಸಾದವಾದ ತಿರುಚಾಂದು ಉರುಂಡೈ ಎಂಬ ಉಂಡೆಯನ್ನು ನೆನಪಿಸುತ್ತವೆ ಎಂದು ಹಲವರು ಓದುತ್ತಾರೆ.
The name Vaidyanatha also belongs to the Deoghar jyotirlinga in Jharkhand and to Parli in Maharashtra. But the name Balambika in the closing verse ties this hymn to the Tamil Nadu shrine. Many read the tank water, earth and ash of the seventh verse as a reference to the temple’s well-known prasada, the small pellet called tiruchandu urundai.
ಎಂಟು ಶ್ಲೋಕಗಳು ಉಪಜಾತಿ ವೃತ್ತದಲ್ಲಿವೆ, ಕೊನೆಯ ಫಲಶ್ರುತಿ ಅನುಷ್ಟುಭ್ ಛಂದಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ನಾಲ್ಕನೆಯ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ “ವಾತಾದಿ” ಎಂದರೆ ವಾತ, ಪಿತ್ತ, ಕಫ ಎಂಬ ದೋಷಗಳಿಂದ ಬರುವ ರೋಗಗಳು. ನಾವು ಸ್ತೋತ್ರನಿಧಿಯ ಪಾಠವನ್ನು ಅನುಸರಿಸಿದ್ದೇವೆ. 1, 2, 4, 5 ಮತ್ತು 8ನೆಯ ಶ್ಲೋಕಗಳ ಸಮಾಸಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿಡಿಬಿಡಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದ ಪದಗಳನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸಿ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದೇವೆ, ಇತರ ಆವೃತ್ತಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಣ್ಣ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸಗಳಿವೆ.
The eight verses are in the Upajati metre and the closing verse is in Anushtubh. In the fourth verse, “vātādi” means diseases arising from vata, pitta and kapha, the three doshas. ರಾತ್ರಿ ತಡವಾಗಿಯೂ ತೆರೆದಿರುವ ಔಷಧದ ಅಂಗಡಿಯ ಕೌಂಟರಿನ ಮುಂದೆ ಚೀಟಿ ಹಿಡಿದು ಕಾಯುವ ಗಳಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಔಷಧಕ್ಕೂ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆಗೂ ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಕೈಚಾಚುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರ ಶಿವನನ್ನು ವೈದ್ಯನೆಂದು ಕರೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ರೋಗಿಯ ನೋವನ್ನೂ ಭಯವನ್ನೂ ಬಲ್ಲವನೊಬ್ಬನಿದ್ದಾನೆ ಎಂಬ ನಂಬಿಕೆ ಆ ಕಾಯುವಿಕೆಗೆ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಸಮಾಧಾನ ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ.
At a pharmacy counter open late at night, waiting with a prescription in hand, the mind reaches for medicine and for prayer together. This hymn calls Shiva a physician. The trust that someone knows the patient’s pain and fear brings a little calm to that waiting.
ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪಠಣ ವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಗೆ ಬದಲಿಯಲ್ಲ. ವೈದ್ಯರು ಹೇಳಿದ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಯನ್ನು ಮುಂದುವರಿಸುತ್ತ, ಮನಸ್ಸಿನ ನೆಮ್ಮದಿಗಾಗಿ ಈ ಮೂರು ಹೆಸರುಗಳನ್ನು ನೆನೆಯುವುದು ಅನೇಕರ ರೂಢಿ.
