ಸುಭಾಷಿತರತ್ನಭಾಂಡಾಗಾರದ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಪ್ರಕರಣ ತೆರೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದಿಂದ. ಸಾವಿರಾರು ನುಡಿಮುತ್ತುಗಳ ಸಂಗ್ರಹಕ್ಕೆ ಇದೊಂದು ಸೊಗಸಾದ ಬಾಗಿಲು.

ಭಾಷೆ, ಕಾವ್ಯ, ಸುಭಾಷಿತ ಎಂಬ ಮೂರು ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಲುಗಳನ್ನು ಇಟ್ಟು, ಒಂದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಸಿಹಿ ಎಂದು ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಭಾಷಾಸು ಮುಖ್ಯಾ ಮಧುರಾ ದಿವ್ಯಾ ಗೀರ್ವಾಣಭಾರತೀ ।
ತಸ್ಮಾದ್ಧಿ ಕಾವ್ಯಂ ಮಧುರಂ ತಸ್ಮಾದಪಿ ಸುಭಾಷಿತಮ್ ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)

भाषासु मुख्या मधुरा दिव्या गीर्वाणभारती ।
तस्माद्धि काव्यं मधुरं तस्मादपि सुभाषितम् ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (English IAST)

bhāṣāsu mukhyā madhurā divyā gīrvāṇabhāratī |
tasmāddhi kāvyaṃ madhuraṃ tasmādapi subhāṣitam ||

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಭಾಷಾಸು (भाषासु, bhāṣāsu) = ಭಾಷೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ (among languages)
ಮುಖ್ಯಾ (मुख्या, mukhyā) = ಮುಖ್ಯವಾದುದು, ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠವಾದುದು (foremost)
ಮಧುರಾ (मधुरा, madhurā) = ಸಿಹಿಯಾದುದು (sweet)
ದಿವ್ಯಾ (दिव्या, divyā) = ದಿವ್ಯವಾದುದು (divine)
ಗೀರ್ವಾಣಭಾರತೀ (गीर्वाणभारती, gīrvāṇabhāratī) = ದೇವತೆಗಳ ವಾಣಿ, ಅಂದರೆ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ (the speech of the gods, Sanskrit)
ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ (तस्मात्, tasmāt) = ಅದಕ್ಕಿಂತ (than that)
ಹಿ (हि, hi) = ಖಂಡಿತವಾಗಿ (indeed)
ಕಾವ್ಯಮ್ (काव्यम्, kāvyam) = ಕಾವ್ಯ (poetry)
ಮಧುರಮ್ (मधुरम्, madhuram) = ಸಿಹಿ (sweet)
ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ ಅಪಿ (तस्मात् अपि, tasmāt api) = ಅದಕ್ಕಿಂತಲೂ (even more than that)
ಸುಭಾಷಿತಮ್ (सुभाषितम्, subhāṣitam) = ಸುಭಾಷಿತ, ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಹೇಳಿದ ಮಾತು (the fine saying)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಭಾಷೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ದೇವವಾಣಿಯಾದ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಮುಖ್ಯವಾದುದು, ಸಿಹಿಯಾದುದು, ದಿವ್ಯವಾದುದು. ಅದಕ್ಕಿಂತಲೂ ಕಾವ್ಯ ಸಿಹಿ. ಕಾವ್ಯಕ್ಕಿಂತಲೂ ಸುಭಾಷಿತ ಸಿಹಿ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

Among languages, Sanskrit, the speech of the gods, is foremost, sweet and divine. Sweeter than that is poetry, and sweeter even than poetry is the fine saying.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಗೀರ್ವಾಣ ಎಂದರೆ ದೇವತೆಗಳು, ಭಾರತೀ ಎಂದರೆ ವಾಣಿ. ಗೀರ್ವಾಣಭಾರತೀ ಎಂಬುದು ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಕ್ಕೆ ಪರಂಪರೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಳಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಗೌರವದ ಹೆಸರು.

Girvana means the gods and bharati means speech. Girvanabharati is a traditional honorific name for Sanskrit.

ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ ಎಂಬ ಪದವನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಹೋಲಿಕೆಯ ಅರ್ಥದಲ್ಲಿ, ಅದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಎಂದು ಓದಬೇಕು. ಹಾಗೆ ಓದಿದಾಗ ಭಾಷೆಯಿಂದ ಕಾವ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ, ಕಾವ್ಯದಿಂದ ಸುಭಾಷಿತಕ್ಕೆ ಏರುವ ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಲುಗಳ ಚಿತ್ರ ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

Tasmat is to be read here as a comparison, than that. Read so, the picture of a staircase from language to poetry to the fine saying becomes clear.

ಸುಭಾಷಿತರತ್ನಭಾಂಡಾಗಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಭಾಷಿತಪ್ರಶಂಸಾ ಎಂಬ ಭಾಗದ ಇಪ್ಪತ್ಮೂರು ಶ್ಲೋಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇದು ಮೊದಲನೆಯದು.

In the Subhashitaratnabhandagara this is the first of twenty-three verses in the section in praise of fine sayings.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕವನ್ನು ಭಾಷೆಗಳ ನಡುವಿನ ಸ್ಪರ್ಧೆಯಾಗಿ ಓದಬೇಕಿಲ್ಲ. ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲೂ ವಚನಗಳು, ಸರ್ವಜ್ಞನ ತ್ರಿಪದಿಗಳು, ಡಿವಿಜಿಯವರ ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮನ ಕಗ್ಗ ಇವೆಲ್ಲವೂ ಇದೇ ಬಗೆಯ ನುಡಿಮುತ್ತುಗಳು.

This verse need not be read as a contest between languages. Kannada has the same kind of gems in the vachanas, Sarvajna’s tripadis and DVG’s Mankutimmana Kagga.

ಯಾವುದೇ ಭಾಷೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಉದ್ದದ ಭಾಷಣಕ್ಕಿಂತ, ಸರಿಯಾದ ಹೊತ್ತಿಗೆ ಹೇಳಿದ ಒಂದು ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಸಾಲು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಕಾಲ ನೆನಪಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಉಳಿಯುತ್ತದೆ.

In any language, one short line said at the right time stays in memory longer than a long speech.
