ವಸುಮತೀಪತಿನಾ ನು ಸರಸ್ವತೀ: ರಾಜನೂ ಕಸಿಯಲಾಗದ ಸರಸ್ವತಿ

ಆಸ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಕಸಿಯಬಲ್ಲವರು ಮೂರು ಬಗೆಯವರು. ರಾಜ, ಶತ್ರು, ಮತ್ತು ಪಾಲು ಕೇಳುವ ಬಂಧು.

ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಆ ಮೂವರನ್ನೂ ಸಾಲಾಗಿ ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಿ, ಸರಸ್ವತಿಯ ಮುಂದೆ ಮೂವರೂ ಸೋಲುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತದೆ.

ವಸುಮತೀಪತಿನಾ ನು ಸರಸ್ವತೀ
ಬಲವತಾ ರಿಪುಣಾಪಿ ನ ನೀಯತೇ ।
ಸಮವಿಭಾಗಹರೈರ್ನ ವಿಭಜ್ಯತೇ
ವಿಬುಧಬೋಧಬುಧೈರಪಿ ಸೇವ್ಯತೇ ॥

वसुमतीपतिना नु सरस्वती
बलवता रिपुणापि न नीयते ।
समविभागहरैर्न विभज्यते
विबुधबोधबुधैरपि सेव्यते ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (English IAST)

vasumatīpatinā nu sarasvatī
balavatā ripuṇāpi na nīyate |
samavibhāgaharairna vibhajyate
vibudhabodhabudhairapi sevyate ||

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ವಸುಮತೀಪತಿನಾ (वसुमतीपतिना, vasumatīpatinā) = ಭೂಮಿಯ ಒಡೆಯನಾದ ರಾಜನಿಂದ (by the lord of the earth, the king)
ನು (नु, nu) = ಖಂಡಿತವಾಗಿ (indeed)
ಸರಸ್ವತೀ (सरस्वती, sarasvatī) = ಸರಸ್ವತಿ, ಅಂದರೆ ವಿದ್ಯೆ (Sarasvati, that is, learning)
ಬಲವತಾ ರಿಪುಣಾ ಅಪಿ (बलवता रिपुणा अपि, balavatā ripuṇā api) = ಬಲಿಷ್ಠ ಶತ್ರುವಿನಿಂದಲೂ (even by a powerful enemy)
ನ ನೀಯತೇ (न नीयते, na nīyate) = ಒಯ್ಯಲಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ (is not carried off)
ಸಮವಿಭಾಗಹರೈಃ (समविभागहरैः, samavibhāgaharaiḥ) = ಸಮಪಾಲು ಕೇಳುವವರಿಂದ (by those who claim equal shares)
ನ ವಿಭಜ್ಯತೇ (न विभज्यते, na vibhajyate) = ಪಾಲು ಮಾಡಲಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ (is not divided)
ವಿಬುಧಬೋಧಬುಧೈಃ ಅಪಿ (विबुधबोधबुधैः अपि, vibudhabodhabudhaiḥ api) = ದೇವತೆಗಳ ಅರಿವನ್ನು ಬಲ್ಲ ವಿದ್ವಾಂಸರಿಂದಲೂ (even by the learned who know the wisdom of the gods)
ಸೇವ್ಯತೇ (सेव्यते, sevyate) = ಸೇವಿಸಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತಾಳೆ (is served)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಭೂಮಿಯ ಒಡೆಯನಾದ ರಾಜನೂ ಸರಸ್ವತಿಯನ್ನು ಒಯ್ಯಲಾರ, ಬಲಿಷ್ಠ ಶತ್ರುವೂ ಒಯ್ಯಲಾರ. ಸಮಪಾಲು ಕೇಳುವವರು ಅವಳನ್ನು ಪಾಲು ಮಾಡಲಾರರು. ದೇವತೆಗಳ ಅರಿವನ್ನು ಬಲ್ಲ ವಿದ್ವಾಂಸರೂ ಅವಳನ್ನು ಸೇವಿಸುತ್ತಲೇ ಇರುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

Neither the lord of the earth nor a powerful enemy can carry Sarasvati away. Those who claim equal shares cannot divide her. And even the learned who know the wisdom of the gods still wait upon her.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ವಸುಮತೀ ಎಂದರೆ ಸಂಪತ್ತನ್ನು ಒಡಲಲ್ಲಿ ಇಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡ ಭೂಮಿ. ವಸುಮತೀಪತಿ ಎಂದರೆ ರಾಜ. ಭೂಮಿಯ ಸಂಪತ್ತೆಲ್ಲ ಅವನದೇ, ಆದರೆ ಸರಸ್ವತಿ ಮಾತ್ರ ಅಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬುದು ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ತಿರುವು.

Vasumati is the earth that holds wealth in her body, and vasumatipati is the king. All the wealth of the earth is his, but not Sarasvati. That is the turn of the verse.

ಕೊನೆಯ ಸಾಲಿನ ತಿರುವನ್ನು ಗಮನಿಸಬೇಕು. ಮೂರು ಸಾಲುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾರೂ ಅವಳನ್ನು ಮುಟ್ಟಲಾರರು ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದ ಮೇಲೆ, ನಾಲ್ಕನೆಯ ಸಾಲು ಅವಳನ್ನು ಸೇರುವ ಒಂದೇ ದಾರಿಯನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದು ಸೇವೆ, ಅಂದರೆ ಸತತ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸ.

Notice the turn in the last line. After three lines saying that no one can seize her, the fourth shows the one way to reach her. That way is service, which means steady practice.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ವಿದ್ಯೆ ಸಿಗುವುದು ಗೆಲ್ಲುವುದರಿಂದಲ್ಲ, ದಿನದಿನದ ಸೇವೆಯಿಂದ. ದೊಡ್ಡ ವಿದ್ವಾಂಸರೂ ಪ್ರತಿದಿನ ಓದುತ್ತಲೇ ಇರುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಶ್ಲೋಕ ನೆನಪಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

Learning is not won by conquest but by daily service. The verse reminds us that even great scholars go on reading every day.

ಯಾವುದೇ ವೃತ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತು ವರ್ಷ ಕಳೆದ ಮೇಲೂ ಹೊಸದನ್ನು ಕಲಿಯುವುದನ್ನು ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸದವರು ಮುಂದೆ ಉಳಿಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇದು ವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯದಿಂದ ಹಿಡಿದು ಎಲ್ಲ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಗಳಿಗೂ ಅನ್ವಯ.

In any profession, those who do not stop learning even after twenty years are the ones who stay ahead. This holds from medicine to every other field.
