ಯಸ್ಯ ನಾಸ್ತಿ ವಿವೇಕಸ್ತು: ಸಾರು ತಿರುಗಿಸುವ ಸೌಟಿಗೆ ರುಚಿ ಗೊತ್ತೆ

ಸೌಟು ಪಾತ್ರೆಯೊಳಗೆ ದಿನವಿಡೀ ತಿರುಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಅಡುಗೆಯ ರುಚಿ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ.

ಆ ಚಿತ್ರವನ್ನು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಬಹಳ ಓದಿ ಏನೂ ತಿಳಿಯದವನಿಗೆ ಹಚ್ಚುತ್ತದೆ.

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಯಸ್ಯ ನಾಸ್ತಿ ವಿವೇಕಸ್ತು ಕೇವಲಂ ಯೋ ಬಹುಶ್ರುತಃ ।
ನ ಸ ಜಾನಾತಿ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಾರ್ಥಾನ್ದರ್ವೀ ಪಾಕರಸಾನಿವ ॥

यस्य नास्ति विवेकस्तु केवलं यो बहुश्रुतः ।
न स जानाति शास्त्रार्थान्दर्वी पाकरसानिव ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (IAST)

yasya nāsti vivekastu kevalaṃ yo bahuśrutaḥ |
na sa jānāti śāstrārthāndarvī pākarasāniva ||

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಯಸ್ಯ ನಾಸ್ತಿ ವಿವೇಕಃ ತು (यस्य नास्ति विवेकः तु, yasya nāsti vivekaḥ tu) = ಯಾರಿಗೆ ವಿವೇಕವಿಲ್ಲವೋ (he who has no discernment)
ಕೇವಲಮ್ ಯಃ ಬಹುಶ್ರುತಃ (केवलम् यः बहुश्रुतः, kevalam yaḥ bahuśrutaḥ) = ಬರೀ ಬಹಳ ಕೇಳಿದವನಾಗಿದ್ದರೆ (but has only heard a great deal)
ನ ಸಃ ಜಾನಾತಿ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಾರ್ಥಾನ್ (न सः जानाति शास्त्रार्थान्, na saḥ jānāti śāstrārthān) = ಅವನು ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಗಳ ಅರ್ಥವನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಯಲಾರ (he does not know the meanings of the sciences)
ದರ್ವೀ (दर्वी, darvī) = ಸೌಟು (a ladle)
ಪಾಕರಸಾನ್ ಇವ (पाकरसान् इव, pākarasān iva) = ಅಡುಗೆಯ ರುಚಿಗಳನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಯದಂತೆ (as it does not know the flavours of the cooking)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಯಾರಿಗೆ ವಿವೇಕವಿಲ್ಲವೋ, ಬರೀ ಬಹಳ ಕೇಳಿದವನಾಗಿದ್ದಾನೋ, ಅವನು ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಗಳ ಅರ್ಥವನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಯಲಾರ. ಸೌಟು ಅಡುಗೆಯ ರುಚಿಯನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಯದಂತೆ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

He who has no discernment but has merely heard a great deal does not know the meanings of the sciences, just as a ladle does not know the flavours of the cooking.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ದರ್ವೀ ಎಂದರೆ ಸೌಟು. ಈ ಹೋಲಿಕೆ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತದಲ್ಲಿ ಎಷ್ಟು ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧವಾಯಿತೆಂದರೆ ದರ್ವೀನ್ಯಾಯ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರೇ ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂತು.

Darvi means a ladle. The comparison became so well known in Sanskrit that it acquired a name of its own, the darvi-nyaya.

ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಪುಟಗಳ ಜಿಹ್ವೆಯ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಜೊತೆಗಾರ. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಕೈ ಮತ್ತು ನಾಲಿಗೆ, ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಸೌಟು ಮತ್ತು ರುಚಿ.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಬಹಳ ಓದುವುದು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದೇ. ಆದರೆ ಓದಿದ್ದನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ಮಾತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳಲು ಬಾರದಿದ್ದರೆ ಅದು ಇನ್ನೂ ಒಳಗೆ ಇಳಿದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಅರ್ಥ.

Reading a great deal is good. But if one cannot say it in one’s own words, it has not yet gone in.

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಓದಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಮುಚ್ಚಿ ಎರಡು ಸಾಲು ಬರೆದಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸ. ಆಗ ಸೌಟು ನಾಲಿಗೆಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

So after reading, closing the book and writing down two lines is a good habit. That is how the ladle becomes a tongue.
