This is a small garland of names in seven verses. It holds thirty-two names of Durga, and every one of them begins with the word “durga”. Durga means a fortress, a hardship, a road that cannot be crossed, and it is also the name of the demon Durgama. The names turn these senses over one after another.
In the last verse and a half the Goddess herself speaks: “whoever recites these names of mine is freed from all fear.” Many households recite it in times of trouble. Below we give the sense of each verse’s names briefly, in the same order.

(The Goddess speaks:) Whatever person, this garland of names of mine, of Durga … - 7 …
… recites, will be freed from every fear, there is no doubt. Though oppressed by enemies, though held captive in a fortress prison, by reciting these thirty-two names he is set free, there is no doubt of it.
About this hymn
We follow the text on stotranidhi.com, titled “Sri Durga Dvatrimshan Namavali Stotram”. Its author is unknown. It is popularly said to come from the Durga Saptashati tradition, with the story that the Goddess taught these thirty-two names to the gods when they asked how calamities might be overcome. That framing story is not part of our text. The hymn is often printed as an appendix in editions of the Saptashati.
Counting the names: six in the first verse, five in the second, six in the third, five in the fourth, six in the fifth and four in the first line of the sixth, thirty-two in all. Every name begins with “durga”, which serves now as hardship, now as fortress, now as the unreachable, now as the demon’s name. So the one word speaks both of the trouble and of the refuge. Many names can be taken two ways. We give the main sense and note the other in places.
The name has its background in the Devi Mahatmya itself. In its eleventh chapter the Goddess foretells that she will slay the great demon Durgama and so be known as Durga Devi. The second and fifth verses of this garland recall that story. The phalashruti begins with the second line of the sixth verse and is spoken by the Goddess herself, who calls these “my names”. The seventh verse has three lines.
This garland can be read alongside the Durga Saptashati pages on our site and the Saptashloki Durga page. Some also recite it at the close of a Saptashati recitation.

For life today
Before leaving on a journey we lock the house, then pull at the lock once more to be sure. At night sleep comes only after the gate is shut. A fortress stands for the same feeling: the trust that what is inside is safe.
In this garland the single word “durga” names both the hardship and the fortress. When trouble comes, there is comfort in turning its very name into a name of refuge. Like the hand that tests the lock, these names give the mind a small assurance.
