Ah, the ways of great souls are strange in some manner past saying. They reckon Lakshmi as worth a blade of grass. And yet they bow under the weight of that same grass.
About this subhashita
Trinaya manyante is a Sanskrit idiom. The dative marks a price: to count a thing as worth so much. A blade of grass is the lowest rung of that ladder.
The whole force of the verse is in the contradiction. Grass has no weight, so it cannot bend anyone. And yet these men bend.
The root nam means both to stoop under a load and to make obeisance. The verse rests on those two senses at once: the more wealth comes, the lower these men hold their heads.

For life today
This can be used as a test. After a person has risen, see only whether their greeting has grown smaller or larger.
This is not humility put on for show. Announcing that one has turned away from wealth is one thing; genuinely not counting it is another.
