They give shade, they hold no snakes, they are easy to climb, they give fruit. Such are the trees along the road, and such too are the great. Both stand only for the thriving of others.
About this subhashita
Vyala is a snake, and can also be a beast of prey. Gatavyala is a tree without that fear in it. Shade is not enough: there must be no dread in sitting down there. That is what the word carries.
Svaroha means easy to climb. A tall tree whose fruit never comes to hand is of no use. Being reachable is itself a virtue.
A margadruma is not a tree in a garden but a tree by the road. It stands inside no one’s fence. That is why it belongs to everyone.

For life today
The same four questions can be asked of a senior doctor. Is there ease in standing beside them. Is there no fear in asking. Do they give time when asked. Does something come to hand at the end. All four are needed.
It is true that a tree does not eat its own fruit. But it first put down roots and grew. That one must grow before one can give is something the verse takes for granted without saying it.
