ವೈದ್ಯರಾಜ ನಮಸ್ತುಭ್ಯಂ: ಯಮನ ಸಹೋದರನಿಗೆ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ

ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆ ಮುಗಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ಕೈಯಲ್ಲಿ ಲೆಕ್ಕಪತ್ರ ಹಿಡಿದು ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಯ ಹೊರಗೆ ನಿಂತ ಕುಟುಂಬದ ಮುಖ ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಪರಿಚಿತ. ರೋಗಿಯೂ ಉಳಿಯಲಿಲ್ಲ, ಕೂಡಿಸಿದ ಹಣವೂ ಉಳಿಯಲಿಲ್ಲ.

ಆ ಮುಖದ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಸಿಟ್ಟನ್ನು ಈ ಅನುಷ್ಟುಪ್ ಒಂದು ನಮಸ್ಕಾರದ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳಿ ಮುಗಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ವೈದ್ಯರಾಜ ನಮಸ್ತುಭ್ಯಂ ಯಮರಾಜಸಹೋದರ ।
ಯಮಸ್ತು ಹರತಿ ಪ್ರಾಣಾನ್ವೈದ್ಯಃ ಪ್ರಾಣಾನ್ಧನಾನಿ ಚ ॥

वैद्यराज नमस्तुभ्यं यमराजसहोदर ।
यमस्तु हरति प्राणान्वैद्यः प्राणान्धनानि च ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (IAST)

vaidyarāja namastubhyaṃ yamarājasahodara |
yamastu harati prāṇānvaidyaḥ prāṇāndhanāni ca ||

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ವೈದ್ಯರಾಜ (वैद्यराज, vaidyarāja) = ವೈದ್ಯರಾಜನೇ (O king of physicians)
ನಮಃ (नमः, namaḥ) = ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ (salutation)
ತುಭ್ಯಮ್ (तुभ्यम्, tubhyam) = ನಿನಗೆ (to you)
ಯಮರಾಜ (यमराज, yamarāja) = ಯಮರಾಜನ (of Yama, the king of death)
ಸಹೋದರ (सहोदर, sahodara) = ಸಹೋದರನೇ (O brother)
ಯಮಃ (यमः, yamaḥ) = ಯಮನು (Yama)
ತು (तु, tu) = ಆದರೆ (but)
ಹರತಿ (हरति, harati) = ಒಯ್ಯುತ್ತಾನೆ (takes away)
ಪ್ರಾಣಾನ್ (प्राणान्, prāṇān) = ಪ್ರಾಣಗಳನ್ನು (the breaths of life)
ವೈದ್ಯಃ (वैद्यः, vaidyaḥ) = ವೈದ್ಯನು (the physician)
ಪ್ರಾಣಾನ್ (प्राणान्, prāṇān) = ಪ್ರಾಣಗಳನ್ನು (the breaths of life)
ಧನಾನಿ (धनानि, dhanāni) = ಹಣವನ್ನು (the moneys)
ಚ (च, ca) = ಎರಡನ್ನೂ (and, that is both)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ವೈದ್ಯರಾಜನೇ, ಯಮರಾಜನ ಸಹೋದರನೇ, ನಿನಗೆ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ. ಯಮ ಪ್ರಾಣಗಳನ್ನಷ್ಟೇ ಒಯ್ಯುತ್ತಾನೆ. ನೀನು ಪ್ರಾಣಗಳನ್ನೂ ಹಣವನ್ನೂ ಎರಡನ್ನೂ ಒಯ್ಯುತ್ತೀಯೆ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

Salutations to you, king of physicians, brother of the king of death. Yama takes only the breath of life. You take the life and the money both.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರದ ಸಾಲಿನಂತೆ ಆರಂಭವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ನಮಸ್ತುಭ್ಯಂ ಎಂಬುದು ದೇವರಿಗೆ ಹೇಳುವ ಮಾತು. ಆ ಭಕ್ತಿಯ ಅಚ್ಚಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಹೊಯ್ದದ್ದು ಒಂದು ಆಪಾದನೆ.

The verse opens like a line of a hymn. Namastubhyam is what one says to a god. Poured into that devotional mould is an accusation.

ಸಹೋದರ ಎಂಬ ಪದ ಗಮನಿಸಬೇಕು. ಸೇವಕ ಅಲ್ಲ, ದೂತ ಅಲ್ಲ, ಸಮಾನನಾದ ತಮ್ಮ. ಕೊನೆಯ ಚ ಇಡೀ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಭಾರವನ್ನು ಹೊರುತ್ತದೆ: ಪ್ರಾಣಾನ್ ಧನಾನಿ ಚ.

Note the word sahodara. Not a servant, not an envoy, but a brother of equal standing. The last syllable, ca, carries the whole weight of the verse: pranan dhanani ca.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಇದು ವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯದ ವಿರುದ್ಧದ ಮಾತಲ್ಲ. ಒಬ್ಬ ವೈದ್ಯನ ಕೈಯಲ್ಲಿ ರೋಗಿಯ ಜೀವ ಮತ್ತು ಜೇಬು ಎರಡೂ ಇರುತ್ತವೆ ಎಂಬ ಸತ್ಯವನ್ನು ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಒಪ್ಪಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಆ ಎರಡನೆಯದನ್ನು ಮರೆತಾಗ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಹುಟ್ಟುತ್ತದೆ.

This is not a line against medicine. The verse makes us admit that a physician holds both the patient’s life and the patient’s purse. It is written for the moment when the second of those is forgotten.

ಪ್ರಾಯೋಗಿಕ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆ ಸರಳ. ಖರ್ಚು ಆಗುವ ಮೊದಲೇ ಅದು ಎಷ್ಟು ಎಂದು ಕುಟುಂಬಕ್ಕೆ ಗೊತ್ತಿತ್ತೇ. ಗೊತ್ತಿದ್ದರೆ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಆ ವೈದ್ಯನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅಲ್ಲ.

The practical test is a simple one. Did the family know what the cost would be before it was incurred. If they did, this verse is not about that physician.
