Shatpadi means a hymn of six feet, or six parts. Here the first six verses tell of Shanmukha’s form, his victory and his birth. The seventh verse speaks of the fruit of reciting it.
The last line of each of the first six verses is the same: sada shanmukham bhavaye hrit-saroje. It means, I always meditate on Shanmukha in the lotus of the heart.

He dwells ever on the summit of Mayurachala, is generous, and grants boons to those who bow. I always meditate in the lotus of my heart on Shanmukha, who holds the Shakti spear in his lotus hand.
He is like the full moon risen from the ocean of Shiva’s face. His lotus faces put to shame the moon with its mark of a deer. He is a sun to the lotus mind of Indra’s daughter. I always meditate on Shanmukha in the lotus of my heart.
Out of a weight of compassion, to instruct the kings who bowed and the six qualities, he quickly took six lotus faces. I always meditate on that supreme Shanmukha in the lotus of my heart.
Long ago he conquered Taraka in the midst of battle and quickly, with joy, freed the gods from sorrow. He is the root of bliss and an ocean of compassion. I always meditate on Shanmukha in the lotus of my heart.
This child was born in a forest of reeds, and the Krittikas fed him milk. So people here call him Karttikeya. I always meditate on that Shanmukha in the lotus of my heart.
He drives away the thick darkness settled in the heart. The verse says that the beginningless cow licked him with great joy and that Indra’s daughter embraces him closely. I always meditate on that Shanmukha in the lotus of my heart.
To the one on whose lotus-mouth this shatpadi lovingly plays at all times, Shadanana, out of compassion, quickly grants all kinds of learning and also gives devotion to himself.
About this hymn
This hymn is from the Subrahmanya group on the website of the Sringeri Sri Sharada Peetham. The source names no author, so we name none. We give no date either. The source places it at Mayurachala, Kunnakkudi.
Of the seven verses, the first six end with the same refrain-like line. The seventh is a phalashruti, saying that one who recites it receives learning and devotion. We give this fruit as the tradition’s belief.
The sense of verse 3 is doubtful. We take shannam gunanam as the six qualities. In verse 6 the words gava anadyaya do not say which cow is meant, so we give only the plain word meaning.

For life today
Many have seen a peacock spread its wings and dance when clouds gather at the start of the first rain. The reason is a gladness inside it. No one told it to dance.
Like the peacock that is the Lord’s mount, we too can keep a glad memory in the heart. The repeating line of this hymn brings that memory back once a day.
