He is hard to reach for those absorbed in worldly desire, worshipped by the dispassionate, saluted by gods and demons, and destroyer of old age and untimely death. Those who worship his feet surpass Brihaspati in speech and Vishnu in wealth. I bow to that Ganadhipa, an ocean whose waters are grace.
I always take refuge in him who is a sun giving joy to the lotus face of Parvati, who is elephant-faced and ready to hold back the host of sins of those who bow, whose belly is bound by the king of serpents, and whose bodily radiance surpasses the rays of the young sun.
I bow to Ganadhipa, who is saluted by sages such as Shuka, who is the imperishable denoted by the syllable ga, who abundantly grants wishes to the rows of devotees who bow with desire, who shines with four arms, is worshipped with full-blown lotuses, and reveals the truth of the Self.
I bow to Vighnesha, who grants leadership over men, who is lord of the worlds beginning with heaven, who wards off fever and other diseases, who drove back the hosts of demons, whose lotus hand shines with the goad, and whom those with untroubled minds always meditate on joyfully in the heart.
I bow for prosperity to Ganadhipa, who is able to remove the weariness of those whose minds are collected, who is always worshipped with flowers and the like, a treasury of forbearance, worshipped by Vishnu and others, born of the one who ended Yama, and who grants the six virtues beginning with shama.
These five verses of Ganadhipa grant what is wished for. Those who recite them joyfully, with a salutation, have their glory sung before scholars. They quickly gain long life, abundant wealth and good sons, and the verse adds that there is no doubt of it.

About this hymn

This hymn is from the Ganapati group on the website of the Sringeri Sri Sharada Peetham. Its heading says Sri Sachchidananda Shivabhinava Nrisimha Bharati Mahaswami composed it, and we follow that. We give no date.

Though the name says pancharatna, the source has six verses. The first five are praise and salutation. The sixth is the phalashruti, a statement of what reciters gain. It promises life, wealth and sons, and we translate it as a statement of faith.

The fourth verse calls him one who wards off fever and other diseases. We translate it as the source has it. Prayer and chanting, however, do not replace medical treatment.

The last word of verse 4 reads vidhnapam in the source. It looks like a small slip from the Roman conversion and was probably meant as vighnapam, lord of obstacles, and we read it so. In verse 5 we take yamantakatmasambhavam as the son of Shiva. Both readings may be open to some doubt.

· Source: the stotra section of the Sringeri Sri Sharada Peetham website (sringeri.net). Where readings differ, the difference is noted here.

For life today

Think of a small stone worn smooth by many hands, such as one near the steps of a temple. No one polished it on purpose. It has grown smooth through generations of touch.

In the same way, the five verses of this hymn must have grown smooth in many mouths, repeated again and again. There is a gentle strength in doing a small thing over and over without letting it go.
