Anandalahari means a wave of bliss. It is a hymn of twenty verses in praise of the Goddess Bhavani. It begins by saying that her beauty is beyond speech, and then goes on to describe her form.
In the middle verses the devotee asks for her compassion and says that she alone is his refuge. The closing verses speak of her good fortune, the austere life of Shiva, and a meditation on her playing with her friends in a spring lake.

O Bhavani, Brahma with his four faces cannot praise you, nor Shiva, destroyer of Tripura, with five, nor Skanda with six, nor Shesha, lord of serpents, with a thousand. Tell me then, what chance have any others in this task?
No words can set apart the sweetness of ghee, milk, grapes and honey, for it is known only to the tongue that tastes it. In the same way your beauty is known only to the eye of Parama Shiva. O you whose qualities lie beyond all the Vedas, how can we describe it?
Betel in your mouth, a line of kohl in both eyes, saffron on your forehead and a string of pearls at your neck all shine. A glittering girdle and a golden sari adorn your broad hips. O Gauri, young daughter of the lord of mountains, I worship you thus without ceasing.
A garland of mandara flowers rests on your breast, and earrings gleam as you listen to the sounding of the veena. O revered Matangi of gentle limbs and graceful movement, consort of Shambhu, your lotus-like restless eyes are supreme.
May Aparna, the complete one with the gracious face, grant me boundless happiness. Her body is clad in gems and gold that shine like the new sun, with deer-like lovely eyes she has made Shiva her own, she is golden like lightning, and she is beautiful in yellow silk and anklets.
A creeper of consciousness and bliss shines here, born of the Himalaya. Her graceful hands are its tender shoots, pearls its flowers, and her curling locks the bees gathered on it. She has taken Sthanu as her support, her breasts bend like laden fruit, and her words are sweet as sap. She is spoken of as the destroyer of ailments. Sthanu is Shiva, or else the post that holds up a creeper.
Others respectfully take shelter in a leafy creeper adorned with a few qualities. My mind, however, thinks thus: Aparna alone is to be served by all in the world, for it is said that even ancient Sthanu, when surrounded by her, bears the fruit of the state of liberation. The word play is on aparna, leafless, and sthanu, a bare trunk.
You are the ordainer of dharma and the mother of all the Vedas. Kubera himself bows at your lotus feet, and you are the source of wealth. O Mother, you are the origin of all desires, and the consort of Shiva who conquered Kama. You are the seed of liberation for the good, queen of the Supreme Brahman.
My mind is restless, so my devotion to you is not abundant, I know. Yet you, the gracious one, must look on me with compassion now. The cloud gives sweet water into the mouth of the chataka bird. I greatly wonder by what means my mind may be made fit for such grace.
O you of virtuous ways, cast the glance of grace on me quickly. It does not befit you to neglect me, who have taken the vow of surrender. If the wish-granting creeper did not grant desires at every step, how would it differ from the common creepers?
I have placed great faith in your two lotus feet and have taken refuge in no other deity here, O Uma. Even so, if your heart is not moved to compassion for me, O mother of Lambodara, where shall I go for refuge, having no support?
Iron that touches the philosopher’s stone at once becomes gold, and the water of the street turns pure when it joins the flood of the Ganga. In the same way, how could my heart, so stained by this sin and that, fail to become pure if it clings to you with love?
From any other than you there is no certainty of gaining what one wishes, but you are able to give even more than the ignorant wish for. So the elders, Brahma and others, have said. Therefore, O Ishani, do what is fitting, so that my mind clings to you night and day.
Your form is reflected in its walls of many gems and crystal, and the crescent moon shines at the top of its palace towers. Mukunda, Brahma, Indra and others stand as your retinue. O consort of the great king of the three worlds, your lovely abode shines in triumph.
Your home is Kailasa, Brahma, Indra and others are your praisers, the three worlds are your family, and hosts of siddhas stand with folded hands. Mahesha is the lord of your life. O daughter of the king of mountains, there is nowhere any comparison to your good fortune.
An old bull is his vehicle, poison his food, the directions his clothing, the cremation ground his playground, and a mass of serpents his ornaments. This whole outfit of Shiva, the foe of Kama, is famed in the world. O Mother, this very wealth of his is the greatness of your good fortune.
Pashupati, whose nature inclines to the dissolution of the whole universe, sits in cremation grounds smeared with ash. Out of compassion for all the world, he held the Halahala poison in his throat. O Kalyani, I take that to be the fruit of his union with you.
Seeing your beauty beyond compare, Ganga became a body of water out of sheer fear, O daughter of the mountain. So Giri-isha, looking at your lotus face and moved by compassion for her, gave her a place on his head and so established her.
The Creator takes your bath water, rich with thick sandal paste, musk and saffron flowers, O revered one. Gathering the dust from your footsteps in his own hands, he is said to fashion with it the lotus-eyed women of the city of the gods.
In a joyous spring wreathed in flowering creepers, on a lake bright with many lotuses and lovely with rows of swans, where the Malaya breeze sways the water, whoever remembers you playing with your friends finds the pain born of fever departs from him.
About this hymn
Tradition ascribes this hymn to Shankara Bhagavatpada. Our source says nothing about its date, so we give none.
The text our source gives has twenty verses, and we follow that without saying how many verses other versions have. Each verse is in the four-line shikharini metre.
In theme it stands close to the Saundaryalahari. The impossibility of praise, a description of the Goddess, a prayer of surrender and a picture of Shiva’s strange way of life follow one another.
The sixth and twentieth verses speak of the removal of illness and fever. We have translated them as the text has them. Prayer and chanting do not replace medical treatment.
· Source: the stotra section of the Sringeri Sri Sharada Peetham website (sringeri.net). Where readings differ, the difference is noted here.
For life today
A wave comes to the shore and goes back, and comes again and again. Each time the shore grows a little smoother. The devotee of this hymn too admits that his mind wanders, and returns to the Mother again and again.
Our own minds wander through the day. Rather than blaming ourselves for the wandering, these verses remind us that there is more strength in returning quietly for the tenth time.
