The Devi Bhujangam is a hymn of twenty-eight verses in praise of the Goddess who presides over the Sri Chakra. It weaves together meditation on her form, the teaching of non-duality, the yoga of the kundalini and hints of mantra. At the close the devotee calls his words a child’s babble and offers them to the Mother.

About this hymn

Tradition ascribes this hymn to Shankara Bhagavatpada. Our source says nothing about its date.

There are twenty-eight verses, each of four quarters in the bhujangaprayata metre. The first two describe the seat and abode of the Devi. The rest speak of doctrine, yoga, mantra and meditation on her form, and end in prayer.

We give the Kannada text of our source as it stands, leaving out the heading and the closing colophon lines. In a few places there are small slips in word-joining and word division.

Where the reading is doubtful we have given the gist of the traditional sense. In verses 8, 11, 15, 16, 17, 19, 23 and 24 some words are unclear in reading or in construction. The meaning there follows the usual understanding.

For life today

In many homes the courtyard is decorated at dawn with a kolam of rice flour. It is scuffed away by the day’s footsteps and drawn again the next morning. Verse 27 reminds us of it: the devotee says that the Mother is both the one who weaves the net and the one who experiences it.

While the lines are drawn, hand and mind settle on one task. This is also what the devotee asks for in verse 23: that nose, tongue, eye, ear and mind rest in one place. A few moments of gathering in this way before the day’s bustle begins are within anyone’s reach.
