Kalabhairava Ashtami, also called Kalabhairava Jayanti or Bhairava Ashtami, marks the appearance of Bhairava, the fierce form of Shiva, as Kalabhairava, the lord of time. It falls on the ashtami of the dark fortnight that follows Deepavali: Kartika krishna paksha in the amanta calendar of Karnataka, which is Margashirsha krishna paksha in the North’s purnimanta reckoning. The tithi is the same; only the month name differs. It is the yearly form of the monthly Kalashtami.
The story
Brahma and Vishnu disputed which of them was supreme, and Shiva brought forth Bhairava, who cut off one of Brahma’s five heads. The act carried the sin of killing a brahmana, and the skull stuck fast to Bhairava’s left palm. He wandered as a kapali, the skull for his begging bowl, until he came to Varanasi, where the sin fell away. He stayed there, and Kalabhairava is held to be the guardian of Kashi, the kotwal of the city. The dog is his vahana.
How it is kept
It is a night observance. The night is spent awake in worship and in telling the stories of Bhairava, Shiva and Parvati, and the main arati is at midnight, with conches, bells and drums. The next morning there is a bath, and Shaivas in particular offer tarpana for the ancestors. Bhairava, Shiva and Parvati are worshipped, and so is the dog: dogs are given milk, curd, sweets and other food. The Kalabhairava Ashtakam, ascribed to Adi Shankaracharya, is recited.
In Varanasi the Kalabhairava temple is the centre of the day, and pilgrims make a round of the eight Bhairava shrines of the city, the Ashta Bhairava. In Karnataka, Kalabhairaveshwara is the guardian deity of the Adichunchanagiri math in Mandya district, and the day is marked there with special pujas, as is the monthly Kalashtami.
Which day Anudina gives
Bhairava is worshipped at night, and so the day is decided by the night. Anudina gives Kalabhairava Ashtami on the day on which the ashtami prevails in the night after sunset: it tests the moment at which pradosha ends, a fifth of the night after sunset, and one night ghati beyond it, and takes the day on which the ashtami is still running then. This is the same test it uses for the monthly Kalashtami. If the ashtami holds that moment on two nights, the first is taken; if on neither, the day on which it is running at sunrise. The time shown for the puja is nishita, the middle of the night.
Because the test falls in the evening, the date can differ by a day between places. Anudina gives 1 December 2026 for Udupi and the Indian cities; an almanac reckoned for a place far to the west, where the ashtami begins earlier by the clock, can give 30 November. On the day of Kalabhairava Ashtami the monthly Kalashtami is not listed separately. It is shown whichever custom, North or South, the reader has chosen.
The bright ashtami of each month belongs to the goddess as Masik Durgashtami, and the dark ashtami to Bhairava; this day is the dark ashtami’s chief festival.
