Karthigai Deepam is the festival of lamps of the Tamil country. It falls in the Tamil solar month of Karthigai, while the Sun is in Vrischika, on the day of the nakshatra Krittika, Karthigai in Tamil, which gives both the month and the festival their name. The Krittika day of the month usually falls at or near the full moon, in November or December. It is kept by Tamils in Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka and wherever they have settled, and Kerala keeps the Krittika of the same solar month as Thrikarthika.
The column of light
The story told for the day is from the Shiva Purana. Brahma and Vishnu quarrelled over which of them was the greater, and Shiva appeared between them as a column of fire stretching across the three worlds. Vishnu, as a boar, dug down to find its foot and could not; Brahma, as a swan, flew up to find its top and could not, and claimed falsely that he had, with a ketaki flower as his witness. Shiva cursed Brahma that he would not be worshipped, and honoured Vishnu for his honesty. Tiruvannamalai is held to be the place of this manifestation, where Shiva is held to be present as the hill Arunachala itself, the hill of fire.
The nakshatra brings a second story. The six Krittikas, the stars of the Pleiades, raised the six infants born in the Saravana pool from sparks of Shiva’s fire, whom Parvati joined into the six-faced Kartikeya, so the day belongs to Murugan as well as to Shiva. The festival is old: it is mentioned in the Akananuru, one of the Sangam anthologies.
Tiruvannamalai and the home
At the Arunachaleshwara temple at Tiruvannamalai the festival runs over several days. Early on the day the Bharani Deepam is lit inside the temple; it opens the day’s observance and should not be confused with the main lamp. At about six in the evening a great ghee lamp, the Maha Deepam, is lit on the summit of Arunachala, and lakhs of people gather below to see it.
At home the lamps are lit at dusk: rows of small clay oil lamps at the door, on the steps, along the walls and in the courtyard. Sweets are made and exchanged, and children set off crackers. In Kerala, for Thrikarthika, the lamps are set on banana stems and decorated with coconut and mango leaves, and the evening honours Parvati.
Which day Anudina gives
Anudina gives Karthigai Deepam on the day on which Krittika is the nakshatra at pradosha, the hour after sunset when the lamps are lit, within the solar month of Karthigai. Drik Panchang fixes it the same way, by the Tamil solar calendar and Krittika holding in the night. If Krittika holds that hour on two evenings running, the first is taken. In 2026 it falls on 24 November, the same day as Kartika Purnima; in 2027 Anudina gives 11 December.
The two days are often confused. Kartika Purnima is a tithi in the lunar month; Karthigai Deepam is a nakshatra in the solar month. They coincide in some years and fall a day or more apart in others, and each almanac is right on its own terms. Anudina lists Karthigai Deepam as a Tamil observance, shown when the reader has chosen the customs of the South.
