Context and commentary on verse 1.20
Sridhara Swami marks the four verses from here as describing Arjuna’s request to Krishna. The sentence begun in this verse ends in the next. Vyavasthitan means those standing in their positions, ready for battle. Shastrasampata is the moment when weapons begin to fly. The Gita unfolds on the edge of this moment.
Arjuna is called kapidhvaja here, the one whose banner bears the monkey, Hanuman. The Vana Parva of the Mahabharata relates that when Bhima met Hanuman, Hanuman promised that in the coming war he would sit on Arjuna’s banner and roar. Besides, at this stage there is no sign of confusion in Arjuna. He has raised his bow and is ready to fight.

Arjuna’s bow appears three times in this chapter. Here it is raised. In the thirtieth verse it slips from his hand. In the last verse it is laid down. Between the raising and the slipping, the main thing that happens is that he looks closely.
When we see things from a distance, we are very sure. The courage we feel the night before a decision cannot be counted on to last into the morning we face it. Most of us have known this in one form or another.
