ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಸ ಘೋಷೋ ಧಾರ್ತರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಾಣಾಂ ಹೃದಯಾನಿ ವ್ಯದಾರಯತ್ ।
ನಭಶ್ಚ ಪೃಥಿವೀಂ ಚೈವ ತುಮುಲೋ ವ್ಯನುನಾದಯನ್ ॥ 19 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)
स घोषो धार्तराष्ट्राणां हृदयानि व्यदारयत् ।
नभश्च पृथिवीं चैव तुमुलो व्यनुनादयन् ॥ 19 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (IAST)
sa ghoṣo dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṃ hṛdayāni vyadārayat |
nabhaśca pṛthivīṃ caiva tumulo vyanunādayan || 19 ||
ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಸಃ (सः, saḥ) = ಆ (that)
- ಘೋಷಃ (घोषः, ghoṣaḥ) = ಘೋಷ, ನಾದ (roar, sound)
- ಧಾರ್ತರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಾಣಾಮ್ (धार्तराष्ट्राणाम्, dhārtarāṣṭrāṇām) = ಧೃತರಾಷ್ಟ್ರನ ಮಕ್ಕಳ (of the sons of Dhritarashtra)
- ಹೃದಯಾನಿ (हृदयानि, hṛdayāni) = ಹೃದಯಗಳನ್ನು (hearts)
- ವ್ಯದಾರಯತ್ (व्यदारयत्, vyadārayat) = ಸೀಳಿತು (tore apart)
- ನಭಃ (नभः, nabhaḥ) = ಆಕಾಶವನ್ನು (the sky)
- ಚ (च, ca) = ಮತ್ತು (and)
- ಪೃಥಿವೀಮ್ (पृथिवीम्, pṛthivīm) = ಭೂಮಿಯನ್ನು (the earth)

- ತುಮುಲಃ (तुमुलः, tumulaḥ) = ಭೀಕರವಾದ (tumultuous)
- ವ್ಯನುನಾದಯನ್ (व्यनुनादयन्, vyanunādayan) = ಪ್ರತಿಧ್ವನಿಸುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾ (making resound)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಆಕಾಶ ಮತ್ತು ಭೂಮಿಗಳನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿಧ್ವನಿಸುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡಿದ ಆ ಭೀಕರ ನಾದ ಧೃತರಾಷ್ಟ್ರನ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಹೃದಯಗಳನ್ನು ಸೀಳಿತು.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
That tumultuous roar, echoing through sky and earth, tore apart the hearts of Dhritarashtra’s sons.

ಹದಿಮೂರನೆಯ ಶ್ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೌರವರ ಕಡೆಯ ಸದ್ದು ಕೇವಲ ತುಮುಲ, ಅಂದರೆ ಗದ್ದಲ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಪಾಂಡವರ ಶಂಖನಾದವೂ ತುಮುಲವೇ. ಆದರೆ ಅದು ಆಕಾಶ ಭೂಮಿಗಳನ್ನು ಮೊಳಗಿಸಿ ಎದುರಿನವರ ಹೃದಯಗಳನ್ನು ಸೀಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಆ ಶಂಖಗಳ ನಾದ ನಿನ್ನವರಲ್ಲಿ ಮಹಾಭಯವನ್ನು ಹುಟ್ಟಿಸಿತು ಎಂದು ಶ್ರೀಧರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳು ಬಿಡಿಸಿ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ.
In the thirteenth verse the sound on the Kaurava side is simply tumula, a din. Here the Pandava conches are tumula too. But this sound makes sky and earth resound and tears the hearts of those opposite. Sridhara Swami spells it out: the sound of those conches struck great fear into your people.
ಶಬ್ದ ಹೃದಯವನ್ನು ನಿಜವಾಗಿ ಸೀಳುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಇದೊಂದು ಕಾವ್ಯದ ಮಾತು. ತಾವು ಮಾಡಿದ ಅನ್ಯಾಯದ ಅರಿವು ಒಳಗೆ ಇದ್ದುದರಿಂದಲೇ ಆ ನಾದ ಅಷ್ಟು ಭಯಂಕರವಾಗಿ ಕೇಳಿಸಿತು ಎಂದು ಹಲವು ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರು ಅರ್ಥೈಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅದಲ್ಲದೆ ಗಮನಿಸಿ: ಸಂಜಯ ಇದನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿರುವುದು ಅದೇ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ತಂದೆಗೆ. ಅವನು ಮಾತನ್ನು ಮೃದುಗೊಳಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.
A sound does not literally tear a heart. This is the language of poetry. Many commentators explain that the roar sounded so terrible because the awareness of the wrong they had done was already inside them. Besides, notice: Sanjaya is saying this to the father of those same sons. He does not soften it.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಕೆಟ್ಟ ಸುದ್ದಿಯನ್ನು ಹೇಳುವುದು ಸುಲಭವಲ್ಲ. ಅದರಲ್ಲೂ ಕೇಳುವವರು ಆ ಸುದ್ದಿಯ ಕೇಂದ್ರದಲ್ಲಿರುವವರ ತಂದೆಯಾದಾಗ. ಸಂಜಯ ಸತ್ಯವನ್ನು ಬದಲಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಆದರೆ ಕ್ರಮವಾಗಿ, ಹಂತಹಂತವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ.
Giving bad news is never easy, least of all when the listener is the father of those at the centre of it. Sanjaya does not change the truth, but he tells it in order, step by step.
ವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯದಲ್ಲೂ ಇದೇ ತತ್ತ್ವ. ಗಂಭೀರ ಸುದ್ದಿಯನ್ನು ಮೃದುವಾಗಿ, ಸಮಯ ಕೊಟ್ಟು, ಕೇಳುವವರು ತಾಳಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಹಂತಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳಬಹುದು. ಆದರೆ ಅದನ್ನು ಸುಳ್ಳಾಗಿಸಿ ಹೇಳುವುದು ಕರುಣೆಯಲ್ಲ. ಅದು ಕೇಳುವವರಿಂದ ಸಿದ್ಧವಾಗುವ ಅವಕಾಶವನ್ನೇ ಕಸಿದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ.
The same principle holds in medicine. Serious news can be given gently, with time, in stages the listener can bear. But turning it into a falsehood is not kindness. It takes away the listener’s chance to prepare.
